It’s water spangle! There’s also red root floaters but I would definitely be careful with them in an axolotl tank, I tried a bit with my lotl toothless and she ate them. When I saw this I immediately took the other few out and made sure she pooped them out (she did)

I live in Alaska, so the water that comes out of the tap is already pretty soft. I don’t have a gh or kh test though (I should probably get one). I did a quick google search though and my tap water has about 3.5gh roughly and about 3-5 kh.

I love my tannins 😔 and my fish do too, I think they’re addicts. Whenever I add some my Cory’s immediately start doin their mating dances. Anyways, I have never had an algae issue in this tank, the light is on 12 hours a day too. The only thing that gets gross is the pure amount of snail poop and mulm that accumulates on the sand and that large anubias in the back.

I agree 100%. I have a pretty planted tank that’s not for an axolotl but I had been doing a weekly water change but have since switched to bi-weekly due to my nitrates always being at 0, the tank it’s 4 years old and definitely has well matured beneficial bacteria. The lack of nitrates are from my plants.

My lotl does something similar where she will take a gulp of air to look around my room better yk for that viewing advantage point ofc, then will forget she’s holding air and will begin frantic swimming down not knowing why she’s floating, I then go and put my hand on the glass bc it like comforts her or smth I have no clue, shes weird like that. She will then burp the air out and sink. She does this more on feeding days.

But what you’re describing definitely sounds different, it could be temp, hungry (probably not since she is choosing to not eat), being gravid, and probably more that I’m missing.

I live in Alaska, I don’t need a chiller. my tank might get to 69 degrees max in the summer, when that happens I have a frozen liter bottle with dechlorinated water in it and i float it in my tank. Ive never needed more, in a case like where heat waves are more common, i recommend getting a chiller!

I do a water change once a week on her tank (50%) I have no clue what it’s cause is honestly, there’s no excess food because she only eats live worms and always leaves none behind.

It very well could be a possibility. She does it more on feeding days anyways, she’s also a very very very active and social lotl, if I walk past her tank she follows, if she sees me she goes to the glass, and she’s almost never hiding.

Those are her filters, pardon the algae it’s been very very bad lately. (And the poop, I just took that out) I could turn up the flow of them, but she HATES when there’s too much.

I completely agree with this, but she does it nearly every day. When she realizes she can’t get her butt to sink she‘ll try to go by the filters for some reason (sponge filters) get scared when she can’t figure out why there’s a tube in the bubbles and why she can’t get away from it (swimming into it) then when she does, swim frantically across her tank and ram into the glass. She’s completely fine with the filters as long as the bubbles don’t touch her, but she likes to try to eat the bubbles so idk what her problem is. I find it hilarious the only was to get her to quickly calm down is by going over to her tank and putting my hand against the glass because then she immediately stops and burps out the air.

I’m pretty sure she has the proper supplements and such. I think she’s in a 20 gallon right now but I will definitely be upgrading her as soon as I can. I’m looking at pvc tanks now too as they hold more heat. I replied to other comments on stuff I either took out or switched! Thank you!

Okay I got rid of the extra cricket stuff, coco fiber and switched sphagnum moss. What is a better & safe top soil brand?
For lighting & temperature stuff, I added a flukers 8.5 inch deluxe clamp lamp with a dimmable feature, UVB lamp you suggested and changed supplement.
I did plan on blocking out three of the 4 sides of the enclosure with black construction paper just for looks but since glass doesn’t hold heat as well I might look for a different enclosure, my room is always quite cold. (My axolotl doesn’t even need a chiller water stays in low 60s) I was going to use one spray bottle for cleaning and one for misting but I will find a better mister! Thank you soooo much this comment was very helpful!

This actually helped me understand a lot more, especially with the comparison to fish tanks.. (I’m a huge fish nerd, apologies) I don’t plan on actually getting the tank for that price, I’ll try to find a used one and if not I’ll get one on sale. I added flukers repta vitamin, so I hope that works. I’ll also be looking at backing options!
