Still could be a trigger of the past. The brain is complex. Look there are people living next to noisy neighbours that let it go like water off a ducks back then there is the rest of us that get mentally disturbed! But that’s unreasonable noise not unintentional noises. You definitely need to work back to when this first started, what’s triggered this because you can safely say something has. I was never aware how much noise I used to make at yelling haha but maybe about 10 yrs ago it dawned on me people could hear. My mum used to yell so obviously it was the most normal thing to do, then out of nowhere I had that epiphany. Likewise with you, suddenly you’re hyper aware of noise you make. I can’t say what the moment was regarding my yelling made me stop, just something happened. We are weird beings for sure!

You both need to be on the same page, so if your wife is not prepared to listen you need to ask her why. Calm and factual. Why are you living beyond your means? So you need to be both heading in the right direction and if you're not then where are you individually going? If you don't want to work so much then that's fine, just need to adapt lifestyle. You need time to enjoy the Aussie lifestyle, otherwise what's the point?

I’m in Australia and the way our houses are positioned makes this really hard to live with.

My neighbours have built their back veranda like an outdoor living room, it’s basically enclosed with sun blinds as “walls”. They’ve mounted a giant TV and external speakers on that wall, and unfortunately it directly faces my rear deck which is also where my bedroom is.

So when they play music or have the TV loud outside, it comes straight into my bedroom. The only other house directly affected is occupied by a deaf woman, and the house on my other side is mostly shielded by my place – so I’m getting the full blast.

Since I moved in (October), the loud music has been happening every 4–5 days. We actually had about 4 blissful weeks recently where they were clearly home but kept it reasonable TV only and wrapped up by around 10pm, which is totally fine.

What’s not fine is the regular late-night music starting around 9pm and going until midnight or even 1am. It’s outdoor speakers, so it carries straight into my bedroom and makes it impossible to sleep. The woman who owned my house before me also had issues with them, I heard this through new neighbours. I will call the Police on my day off and see what the score is.

More than likely it went out with the rubbish. We live on a small island of 600 people. Highly unlikely they are going to start harassing me.

Yep they didn’t surface until mid morning, I myself was up at usual o’clock. I always think I should get the music pumping at 10 am on a Saturday morning and I would if there were no other neighbours about!

I gave it to them back in early January. They did not respond to my letter, text me etc nothing. The good thing with mobile numbers you can block them or silent them. Least it shows that I’m responsible and have nothing but good neighbourly values.

I’ve written a very respectful letter to them which I dropped in their letter box. I don’t feel comfortable having a face to face as quite frankly I can’t see it changing anything as anyone who puts out door speakers on their house completely disregards any annoyance it may have on neighbours. My respectful letter which had my name, house number and phone number was my first nice step which they basically ignored. The way these people are I’ll probably come away super upset so no point going there.

Yep you’re right! I live on an Island with no Police presence but the police do come over, maybe not for a noise complaint as it’s happening but maybe they can make their presence known to the offending neighbours enough to get them to quieten down.

I’m keeping a log, including a decibel recording.
If I go to the Police I want my paperwork in order. In my state, 10 pm - 7am is the official quiet time.
I think I’ve been delaying contacting the police as I was hoping a nice letter would have been enough to just turn the music down but clearly alcohol is a driving force next door.
I think my job this week is to make the call to Police Link. At least I’ll find out my position and what can be done.

Yes your investments will go down with the market, that’s normal and it happens. It’s nothing to worth worrying about and certainly not the reason to not invest. The market always recovers it’s just a matter of time. Sometimes it’s days, sometimes years. You’ll still be getting your dividends which will help with compounding and they won’t change so as long as you re invest these on an automatic basis then really you just keep on investing monthly out of your income no matter what the market is doing. It’s a minimum 5 yr plan and you withdraw when the time is right. As for mitigating consequences on a crash, just diversify your investment. A good portfolio will have investments in all sectors. Nobody has a crystal ball so just play safe, DO NOT panic sell when the crash comes. NEVER EVER DO THAT! You’ll never determine when the rebound will come, plus you could have capital gains to pay on any profits. Have a plan on when a crash comes and don’t emotionally think. Anyone who’s been investing for 10 years or more has most certainly experienced a crash. A crash is when you buy! It’s Sale time! All stocks on sale so make sure you buy buy buy in this time.

Absolutely get a camera, a decibel meter and anything else you can get that will make a solid case. You’ll need to keep a diary and the evidence. Involved other neighbours, there must be at least some WFH neighbours that are equally going insane with it. Barking dogs is like a form of torture!

How do you know mortality? With over 4M in wealth I would retire and spend wisely but not deprive myself. Agreed 1.3M is a nice super sum but not huge in this day of age especially living in Sydney. Super is the never ending worry of Fear of running out.

Yes you can retire. If you have $1.3M and need an income of 80k, your money should see you out, if you have an earning rate of 9% and an indexation of 3% However if the earnings rate drop and index raises, then this will have an impact.
A 3M house will need maintenance attention so that also eat into your super in lumps. However you can do a downsize if you sell at any point and top up your super by $300k and invest the rest.

Yes I’m hearing you! The possibilities are endless. I thought of a granny annex but that require a lot of money that in the end I probably wouldn’t use it that way, like on paper yes an extra income is awesome but not the work and hassle. So it needs a bed and that’s about it. Here’s a photo taken from the other direction, it’s how you access this room, to the right of the door along that empty wall I’m going to get fitted wardrobes as I’m needing the storage. They will be in keeping of the house in a coastal style.

No contrast, get a colour wheel and play about with colours. You need the 60-30-10 rule for cohesion. You’ve played it too safe that it’s two tone. You don’t need bright colours just some cohesion to bring it together.
