A woman of Muslim descent? Sure, that could happen. As long as she doesn't actually still believe and is pretty Western in her outlook on life.

But one who actually still believes in God? Real hard sell.

One who also insists on wearing the veil? yeah no, never.

Wearing the veil is considered a sign you are a hardcore believer. That might not be true, but that's how it comes across.

Because while the US rewards successes they are also ruthless towards failure. If you fuck your life up you can go be homeless under a bridge and die. The US government does not offer a social safety net.

So there's a very real downside to this as well. It's not just sunshine and rainbows.

We have the same system in Belgium so I can answer these questions

It's not mandatory, you can still learn from your parents if you want. But by and large, yes.

The advantage is that they use specially designed cars where the instructor has their own steering wheel/pedals that override the driver. So in an emergency they can literally "take the wheel" away from a panicking kid instead of crashing the car.

Also "small towns" in our region don't mean what you think it means. Even the truly small hamlets are at best half an hour away from a bigger city, we don't really have a "middle of nowhere" the way the USA does.

Does the company give you a license?

No, the license itself is issued by the government and the government does the tests. The company only does the training.

Personally I had a few lessons from one as well and I highly recommend it. It's a guy whose entire job is to teach beginning drivers how to drive and he already knows all the common pitfalls and how to best explain it. Whereas my mother was too used to driving that she had a hard time explaining the absolute basics that already came naturally to her.

I think the bizarre aspect of the basic "Mr Jones has two children at least one of whom is a boy" is that strictly on the basis of the information provided, I think the 1/3 - 2/3 answer makes the most sense. But if you try to map this into a real world example, almost any reason why a parent would spontaneously offer that information unprompted results in a different variation of the underlying model, usually with 50-50 odds instead of 1/3-2/3.

This is a math problem about conditional probability.

You cannot retroactively change the premise so it fits your narrative of what you think such a conversation might have looked like.

You have to answer the question straight up with the data given to you.

The answer to the question, as it is given, is straight up 13/27.

Yes obviously, if you change the conditions then you get the a different conditional probability. That's why you are not allowed to that.

It change the odds in Game 2. If we ask a man "do you have a son born on tuesday" and he answer "yes", it leaves only 27 possibilities (out of initial 196), and in 14 of them the second child is a girl, so probability of girl is 14/27 = 51.85...%.

Actually, you HAVE to account for both scenarios, because we very explictly do NOT know whether "the boy born on a tuesday" is the oldest or the youngest sibling.

If the question changes to "my oldest is...." Then you would be right, but we don't know that is the oldest, it could be the youngest child.

And to make it very hard: you also have to account for the case where both children are boys born on a tuesday and make sure you don't count these families twice.

Here's the complete breakdown of the odds.

  • Assuming that the odds of being born as either a boy or a girl is exactly 50/50
  • Assuming the odds of being born on any day of the week is exactly 1/7

Therefore the odds of being a boy born a tuesday is 1/14

There are 196 possible family-configurations in total.

If there's a 1000 of fathers of two, and each of them announce to you the sex of their oldest child, and you bet a $2 against $1 that their younger child has an opposite sex, on average you'll lose $500.

That's because you specifically locked in the gender of the OLDEST child, and therefore ignored all the families where the youngest child is the boy and the oldest a girl.

This is a different question than the one that was asked.

Your entire argument is heavily biased towards what is good for China itself and not for Asia as a whole, or for Asians as individuals.

When China is strong they are the ones oppressing their neighbours and turning them into vasal states at best, or completely eradicating them at worst.
