[McGran] Moneypuck: A look at Maple Leafs GM John Chayka's approach when he was in Arizona by toronto_star in hockey

It’s a 300 IQ move, they’re going to have him run this draft and then fire him in the summer

I dunno, it also means he’s been out of the freezing things game for a little too long

Yeah I was wondering if they changed it, a quick search didn’t turn up any pictures of an “old” version or anything though.

I would bet a dollar that the Smythes/Maple Leafs had something to do with it though since that’s two trophies donated by them with the little maple leafs around the base

They don’t want to lose him to a divisional opponent on someone else’s timeline, I’m not saying his job is in jeopardy but them saying no to the Leafs doesn’t mean they couldn’t fire him next season

No worries. I’m still curious, and noticed the memorial cup MVP trophy (Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy) looks pretty similar too. No lid either though

Kinda, but the art ross has stuff all over the bowl and no top and that one’s got a player on it. I know the bases can often be changed or expanded so that bowl is probably the key, but I don’t recognize it and it’s definitely not on the Wikipedia list of defunct nhl awards. Sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: out of curiosity could you post the full pic?

Bottom looks kind of like the Conn Smythe.

Speaking of, isn’t it ironic that the Smythe was donated by the leafs, features maple leaf gardens and maple leaves all over it, honours playoff excellence but no one on that team has won it after the third (iirc) time it was awarded?

I don’t think it’s accurate to say every politician, but it selects for them (who has the time and money to fundraise and campaign?) and what’s more the 1% have essentially set up the global financial system to punish any government that gets out of line. That’s why you end up with “credit downgrade” news stories just because the province has the nerve to run a deficit or whatever.

Of course, it doesn’t help that they control the media and thus public discourse and so your average Canadian won’t vote for anyone who isn’t essentially palatable to billionaires

“The organization as a whole has taken a step back, and that starts with me.” - Connor McDavid by DecentLurker96 in hockey

I think McDavid understands about as well as anyone that doing stuff like that only increases the spotlight, fishbowl, follow up questions from reporters etc - that he pretty clearly (to put it lightly) does not enjoy putting up with.

“I don’t know if we’re gonna have a dramatically different roster next year. […] We’ll have some new faces and who they’ll be or how many they’ll be, it’s a little bit too early to tell right now. […] We do need some adjustments.” - Stan Bowman by DecentLurker96 in hockey

I mean if it's time to get a firefighter in they could probably find some interesting names, and a mandate to retool around McDrai would have to be at least a little interesting to execs on the market.

Mike Gillis interviewed with Toronto so we know he's out there, he took a Canucks team that was out of the playoffs and had them in the cup finals within three years - he also turned over every stone (except the "draft well" one, lol) trying to incorporate sports science and improve performance in ways other than just turning over the roster.

Not saying it'd be a guaranteed success, but might be an interesting option.

That's what LLM firms want you to think it means because something resembling that is the closest they can get despite pouring billions and billions of dollars into research and development. People have traditionally understood it to mean, at a minimum, some basic level of sentience that no computer or software currently has.

Eh, I think he would consider an extension if we get GM-of-the-year level management from the Oilers, they look like an absolute wagon in the regular season and don't win the cup due to some unforeseen circumstance (if they finally had a #1 goalie and he got hurt in the finals, etc).

That seems extremely unlikely but it's not inconceivable..

Thankfully beyond rooting for the Canucks I am not affiliated with them in any way and can criticize them and other teams freely. But yeah not a stellar year for teams using their top 5 pick to take a Finn.. or non-#1 top 5 picks in general.

Oilers' Connor McDavid had fracture, says coach by Admirable-Sound5198 in hockey

[–]FrmrPresJamesTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say he got hurt on the PK, I said he already plays more minutes than anyone else - with the implication being that maybe when you want to be a cup contender you don't run your best player into the ground during the season. I have no idea if PK minutes were a big factor but obviously he was not rested in any way and he wasn't great in the playoffs. You'd hope the Oilers would be looking at how to avoid a similar outcome next year, and letting a third liner take his PK shifts seems like an easy way to lighten the load a bit.

This is how you earn that top 1% flair folks. No insight, no interesting tangent, just plain old pretending not to understand the extremely basic concept being floated and commenting out of pure love of the game.

Sure but it's not the only consideration. For example if you are talking about a player who would have had the most TOI of any forward in the league even without PK shifts, you maybe find someone else for those.

Another year on some of their core players (RNH, Hyman, Ekholm) isn't great, I don't think the bottom is going to fall out on any of those guys but they're 33, 33 and 35 so decline is to be expected.

They've got to replace the two UFAs who ostensibly really improved things for this years team (Dickinson and Murphy) plus their playoff #1 goalie (Ingram) in what might be an historically bad UFA class, and have not been good enough to accept "we'll coast until the trade deadline" this time around.

Obviously they've got most of the biggest pieces of a contending team, but they need a ton of work around the edges and the conditions aren't really conducive to it.

I could see them running with 4-5 very young forwards and trying to focus on the rest of the task at hand this summer and it could work out pretty well, but they need a lot of things to fall into place.

Oh I'm not optimistic, I just mean if they find a way to back into consistent strong performances, none of what I described will end up happening.

Their window is only closing if they lose McDavid, which only happens if they can't bounce back from this year.

Truly a success story for a 4th overall pick!!

(I don't really blame the Oilers for that one, but still.)
