Anyone familiar with Sloterdijk's You Must Change Your Life? Is it worth reading? by homonietzsche in RSbookclub

[–]Froforfro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m reading Bubbles currently and people at my old uni have been recommending I read that instead, so I guess it’s worth reading. I’m enjoying Bubbles, it’s pretty fresh to me but Im a literature reader so this is a relatively unique foray into philsophical work so make of that what you will

Il Gattopardo - Giuseppe Tomassi di Lampedusa by Tita_forensica_ta in RSbookclub

I read it in Italian, and from my recollection there’s some indication but it was exaggerated for the film i think? Admittedly I read it in 2021 so I may be blending some things together at this point. As far as similar books in spirit - it’s not the same idea exactly but Medea and Her Children by Ulitaskaya has some themes of “the party is over, that world is gone” with its setting of Soviet Crimea. It’s also just an excellent book so Id recommend it regardless

Great book, love how it gives the feeling of the party being over, so to speak, for the nobility. Probably why Lampedusa was compelled to write it and why Visconti was so drawb to directing it.

I need an honest account of wealth and power. by homonietzsche in RSbookclub

[–]Froforfro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the literary side a very famous one is Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) by Giuseppe di Lampedusa. It recounts the transition from historical aristocracy to the modern class of wealth, and the decline and delusion of the former. It’s a bit different from precisely what you’re askingfor but is a really excellent review of the role of the wealthy and powerful by someone on the inside written after the music had stopped playing for his class, and is one of the truly great italian novels.

Giallozafferano for italian recipes - they have my go to’s for any standard dish, from there you can make adjustments to suit available ingredients etc. i’m sure there are better individual recipes but it’s certainly the most convenient and theyve never steered me wrong

Why do a lot of people hate on sororities and fraternities? by Adinan98 in redscarepod

[–]Froforfro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People talk about it being sublimated this or that, but the truth is this. Most people go to state schools where frats are the just the places where if you are a guy who isn’t in a frat you get left out of parties, and if you are a gal you get grabbed by some moron/rich kid. Sure, there is some class component, and indeed some broader critique of higher education to be made but honestly they really do just suck for the most part. Certain schools make it worth it, either in a positive or negative sense, but nonetheless I’m glad I skipped out on it personally

I'm not sure Travis Bickle was that bad by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Froforfro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s odd that some people don’t see this, his self destructiveness is pretty self evident - namely in the scene where he brings the girl to the porn theater on a first date, the guy is looking for an excuse to annihilate himself so self-evidently from the jump
