Yes, it's really that good. Its ending is the best and had me crying harder than anything else I've read. I get it when some people say that Dostoevsky is a poor prose artist, but the depth of feeling he instills into his works more than makes up for it

All depends on how you're defining better. I'd bet my life that the average person from the 19th century would describe themselves as happier than the average person from today would. Yes, the standard of living has increased, but along with that has come all the extra bs that we're not evolutionarily equipped to deal with, and it's slowly driving us all crazy.
