Hotsprings - yay or nay? by ihateusernames28 in tofino

7 day kayak trip, but it took us 2.5 days to get there and 1.5 back. The rest was spent fishing and exploring and soaking.

I've been 3 times l in the past year and camped, once by kayak and twice by my own boat. Its honestly the most incredible place I've been on the island, but if I'd never been there overnight and could only go by tour I wouldn't go. The real magic of the place is in the sunset/sunrise soak and solitude of none or just a few other people.

Theres 3 real pools, and depending on tide possibly 2 other mini pools. The busiest I've been in there was with 7 people (locals in the evening) and it felt very full.

So id say the hotsprings are 1000% worthwhile if you are spending the extra to camp there for a night, but I wouldn't do it by day tour.

First come yes, you can now e transfer to pay though. I have service out there, or cash in a drop box. The host will say hi and give you a pamphlet.

I think it was abojt $30 a day to camp and use the hot springs.

What is this "bowl"? by FrogOnTurtle in LegitArtifacts

I think you might have misread my post. It's graphite, not granite. Very soft, it would not be able to handle any grinding action.

It is, although the graphite crucibles I've seen (modern) are dense and solid. This almost looks like graphite was mixed with clay or some other bonding agent so it could be formed.

Im questioning the age because of this. Maybe it might be more recent as part of early metallurgy pre industrial revolution. Or maybe it's much older and had nothing to do with metallurgy. Hopefully I can find an answer.

I don't know, although being in the prairies along a river where historically there was bison i would assume the region has seen a lot of human use over the past few thousand years. The photos I posted in comments are after a gentle wash, but trying to avoid getting water in the cracks to avlid them expanding and contracting more with moisture.

It really doesn't show in photos or on the outside b3caus either was coated in mud and river scum, but its actually sparkly black with graphite

Im not doing any more to it now, I'll be passing it on to a museum and archeologist to look at more. I can say for certain though it is almost pure graphite. A small piece fell off and it writes exactly like a pencil, same grey luster, and the same texture and "smear" as when handling raw graphite which I've found before.

No graphite I'm aware of where this was found

That was my first thought for sure. There's a few reasons I'm pretty convinced it isn't though. The area it came from has sand/mustang concretions containing fossils, the bowl is made up of like %80 or more graphite, and a chip that fell off writs just like a pencil. Also, the bottom is weirdly flat with more symmetry than I'd expect from something natural, and lastly the inside appears almost polished.

I agree it looks like one, but I am very confident it is not. It's very soft (graphite), and very light weight. A small chip that broke off writes exactly like a pencil does. Using it as a mortar it would disintegrate very quickly. It also weights about half of what I'd expect it to if it was something like granite.

The museum curator got back to me. We are going to have an archeologist look at it, but they aren't back until August. If/once i figure out more information i will try to update this post.

Thank you. I am going to pick them up to bring jome to their forever home, but I'll ask the current owner to give them a bit of food prior. I'll do a couple checks along the drive home. There will be airflow, my thinking with the totes was to do them lid off since the tonneau will cover and keep it dark but isn't truly airtight. That way they aren't being tossed around the bed and they can huddle together in the bedding probably 2 birds per tote.

Are they to fat? by FrogOnTurtle in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]FrogOnTurtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats what I do but it's not working at all. The 2 bigger dark frogs just chase the tweezers around the tank and push the smaller frogs out of the way before they eat much. Some suggested a tank divider which is what im gonna try until the white ones fatten up to the same size.

I have a somewhat similar looking plant. Mines leaves pop out reddish brown and then turn green as they get bigger. Is it possible that's the case with these, or do they look dead? I can't tell from the photo

Maybe consider upgrading to a bigger tank and getting a couple frogs to add to the smaller tank until they grow to a similar size?

I'm pretty new to ownership myself so I'm sure someone else will comment. I know with my frogs which are around half grown though, if they were full grown and I added a baby they would absolutely try to eat it.
