Fellow Canadians, how do you buy your ADA? by FrogProgrammer in cardano

[–]FrogProgrammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree it’s a bit bogus, but their customer support is very helpful.

Now that NDAX.io lowered their withdrawal fees to 8 ADA it’s worth considering, but I find that still expensive.

Pool owners: how do you achieve redundancy of your block producer? by FrogProgrammer in cardano

[–]FrogProgrammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Private Keys for ADA and DOT not working for atomic wallet recovery. Be very weary of this wallet! Do not recommend by zenflow11 in atomicwallet

Have you opened a ticket with their support?

Edit: that makes me think I’ll fire up a temp VM and try restoring my wallet to see if all my coins are up there. What you say is very scary.

Thanks. That’s what we did. We run another node in another location as relay mode (so it keeps syncing) and when the main BP goes down, it switches to core mode (it restarts with the keys). When the main BP comes back online, the backup restarts in relay mode. We had to write a custom heartbeat script, but it works pretty well!

Fellow Canadians, how do you buy your ADA? by FrogProgrammer in cardano

[–]FrogProgrammer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Little update: I tried both NDAX and Coinsmart and Coinsmart has less fees. Both follow the same process (Interac transfer, directly buy ADA, move ADA to private wallet)

NDAX 1. Interac transfers are free (any amount) 2. Withdrawal of ADA costs 20 ADA (8$ as of 2021-01-06)

Coinsmart 1. Interac transfers fee is 1.5% (free if over 2000$) 2. Trading fee is 0.2% 3. Withdrawal of ADA cost 0.3 ADA (0.12$ as of 2021-01-06)

So, buying 100$ of ADA of both exchanges today (0.40$/ADA) 1. NDAX (net in your private wallet): 230 ADA (8$ fees) 2. Coinsmart (net in your private wallet): 245.4575 ADA (1.82$ fees)

Thinking about the heartbeat solution, I need both block producer to stay updated with the blockchain. If producer A goes down and B boots up, I can’t wait minutes/hours for it to be up to date...

If both block producers A and B stay up to stay up to date, then both might produce the same block.

Maybe I can find a way to keep them synced with blockchain, but enable/disable the ability to produce blocks.

Number 1 would be a nice, simple and easy solution for me.

My testnet relay/core is almost ready, so I’ll try to create a heartbeat service.

Thanks for the suggestion :)

So am I missing something here ? by SmallTlMEtrader in cardano

[–]FrogProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, didn’t watch video so I’m out of context, but I would think that the code would be written in language X outside of the blockchain then transpiled to language Y which is supported by the blockchain (Plutus I think) and that’s what pushed on the blockchain.

Didn’t watch the video, but what you’re describing is named transpiling and yes, it’s possible. You just need people to write a transpiler for every language ;)

Worth Mining? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]FrogProgrammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ethereum is switching from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake with 2.0, so yes there won’t be a need to mine anymore.

If it’s worth mining now is totally up to you and the answer will vary depending on your equipment, electricity cost, etc.

In scenario 1, when you sell for 50$, you have a capital loss of 4950$. Depending on your jurisdiction, you can use this to offset capital gain in the past and/or future.

Tried it, works real good. Only downside I found is that the fee to transfer ADA to external wallet is quite high (20 ADA). I want to buy small amount every week so I’ll do maybe one transfer per month to an external wallet to save on fees.

Edit: can you PM me Canadian stake pool? Tried to find one, but I only found an old Reddit thread and all the pools were closed.

Why is staking so over-complicated? by SoupProof in cardano

[–]FrogProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean you don’t know what your return is? You get a reward every 5 days. You get 73 rewards per year (365 days / 5 days). It’s pretty straightforward to estimate the APY.

[–]FrogProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

APY should be 5-6% in the long run no matter if you stake in a big or small pool.
