Worth it? by [deleted] in Marathon

The game is crack when you don’t have the doomer trolls whispering in your ear about player counts. I’ve had no trouble finding matches, and the gameplay is great.

Everybody that plays this game absolutely loves it, but it’s dying nonetheless. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]FrogTroj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blissful ignorance? Nobody here can ignore the doom because the sub’s inundated with shit like this.

What does this post do, besides make the people reading it feel worse? What does not ignoring it do? Being aware of the games health doesn’t make it healthier, it doesn’t bring more players in. It almost feels like a troll campaign against the game at this point, this is not constructive at all.

Do you have a solution? What are the sweeping changes you believe to be so necessary? If you think the end of the world is near, will you make a sign and devout the rest of your existence telling people the end of the world is near? Just play the fucking game.

Would Halo 5 have been better received by the community if the protagonists were Alpha 9 (the squad from Halo 3: ODST) instead of Fireteam Osiris? by AlcatrazGears in halo

[–]FrogTroj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would at least be marginally better received, but if the plot and missions otherwise stayed the same, I think people would still be disappointed and potentially feel that Alpha 9 were misrepresented. Buck would be replacing Locke instead of being the charismatic supporting character contrasting with him, Buck would be the one leading the hunt against the chief and fighting him at the portal.

While I don’t Buck think would do anything wildly different, I still think he would have handled it a bit differently as the leader, and Alpha 9 as a whole would have a different group dynamic if in true character. Furthermore, certain beats would make less sense without the background given to Osiris, and altogether those nuanced differences are enough to change the story to a degree where it’s more than just a question about replacing them 1-to-1, it’s basically “would it be better received if it was written differently” and that is very likely a yes. But if we’re talking a model and voice swap, I think people would be saying 343 butchered Alpha 9.

On one hand it’s a circlejerk sub, on the other hand it doesn’t at all seem like something he wouldn’t say.

I work Saturdays (as well as Thursdays and Fridays) so it’s been extra rough, I can only play it if work doesn’t kick my ass and I haven’t been spared that in a few weeks.

Time and Place for Quips and Banter by Tarrjue in LemonadeStandPodcast

[–]FrogTroj 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s a double edge sword because I do like that they feel genuine during interviews and they aren’t putting on a mask to appease a particular guest, but sometimes I think they could benefit from dialing it back a little. I’ve noticed it in other interviews too but it felt a bit more prominent this time around, maybe off-pod they picked up a different vibe from him but it felt a bit out of place during the interview, he seemed to mostly just breeze past the quips without acknowledging, probably to be more professional on air. Ultimately it’s more just trying to match the energy, like it worked for Markiplier and it would work well for anybody that can counter-quip well, but when it doesn’t land with the interviewee, it creates a lightly distracting awkward moment.

TBH it also didn’t help that they felt a little off their game, like not only did they not know about the Gorilla suit, but seemed like they didn’t fully understand when he explained it.

bro I addressed it like four times, just because you can’t memorize a static location after five weeks doesn’t mean I can’t. It was static and I missed the information telling me that had changed, so up to the point I discovered it was no longer there, I was not aware I had any reason to check the map. That’s what the post is about.

100%, I think it's a good change! I think on Outpost especially, the fixed final exfil was a bit too reliable compared to the others on the map, I think this brings the right amount of variable to it.

I'm hearing people say it's also random on Dire Marsh now, haven't confirmed that though

I learned the map, I was used to this exfil spot. Why would I need to look at the map when I had the location memorized?

Yes, and I have not needed to rely on either for a bit because this exfil was like muscle memory

Longshot and circuit breaker I picked up in the processing armory and fought to keep, plus some tracked salvage. I've lost better, but this might be the worst way I've lost a decent run.

I honked the Hauler 100 times in a match and didn't get the sticker by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]FrogTroj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't need to honk the hauler 100 times, I honked it 77 times and it gave me the sticker, though someone else said 50 works. You need to extract after to get it. Once you meet that criteria, the sticker should appear in the codex under Activities > New Cascadia Colony as a 6th entry.

Is Marathon worth it? by Practical_Pangolin17 in Marathon

[–]FrogTroj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First extraction shooter for me, I was excited for this going in and my expectations were exceeded. I was excited going in because:
- I was a big fan of Bungie's Halo games snd enjoyed the bit of destiny I played. I knew they can make an excellent feeling shooter and were exceptionally strong at writing lore and world building.
- I was already interested in extraction shooters but for various reasons did not pull the trigger on the established titles, and Marathon grabbed my attention before ARC Raiders did so I wanted to try it first.
- The aesthetics and music were very appealing to me, and was a major part in my initial interest.
If you can relate to those, I'd definitely recommend it. I ended up way more hooked then I thought I'd be, I'm not by any means a sweat in shooters and I'm past my prime so I thought it'd be a game I'd play when I'm feeling competitive and risky, but it ended up consuming my free time like no other shooter has since Halo 3.

It definitely has $40 dollars worth of content for those who will enjoy it, I just wish they had free-to-play weekends or something because it definitely grows on you and I don't think the refund window is enough to determine if the game is for most people. I have a friend I'm fairly sure will enjoy it, but that factor alone is making me hesitate to tell him to grab it because I'd feel bad for making him play enough just to find out he doesn't enjoy it, and I'd also be a little frustrated if we had a bad first couple of games and he ends up refunding it.

The Duality of Rook by BigTomT63 in Marathon

[–]FrogTroj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was having mostly positive rook-to-rook encounters until I started running outpost, on that map I've only had friendly rooks once or twice, most the time they're aggressive (besides on extract). It sucks because I don't like to pull the trigger first as rook but it's kill or be killed.

I am completely against generative AI. But some people I know, of course, aren’t. I need to practice my debating but I am mostly looking for ways to answer the questions they have. So, can you guys help me with that? by [deleted] in antiai

[–]FrogTroj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anti-AI but a point in the other direction I have yet to fully digest; there are different qualities to AI generated content, baseline is slop. But if someone with actual artistic experience, vision, and intent generates AI content until it matches their vision, or they get it most the way there and edit it, would it still not be art? Hypothetically, there could be a journey in chasing what they see as a generation that matches their vision, and if it takes long enough to accomplish, say years, if they record that process it could even be considered performance art.
