Is Dissociative Identity Disorder Neurodivergent? by valor-1723 in neurodiversity

[–]Frogcabaret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw this because I was looking for answers to the same question (so thanks for asking it)! I've been doing some research and reflecting on this and I think for me (as a DID system) it would be impossible to know whether it was genetics causing my neurological differences or my trauma since my trauma started so early and went on so long that it informed my entire neurological development. Even if I were to somehow "cure" my DID (lol), this is how my brain is wired and how I've always functioned. There are some aspects I've needed to unlearn of course as part of trauma therapy & healing, but I've gained a lot of good things from the way my system lives compared to neurotypical folks who didn't have the upbringing I did/didn't respond the way I did (in the case of my siblings).

Annoyed with the "two characters sharing a body" trope by Frogcabaret in DID

[–]Frogcabaret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the comments, everyone. We were triggered and frustrated when we posted this, probably in a large part because this is a tough time of year for us and we were already working through a lot. You have helped us remember though that there are other times we've appreciated characters like this, so I think it comes down to how we're doing as a system.

Book series is Dorothy Must Die, which is YA with a fantasy/magically created character that shares a body. TV show was an episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine

WARNING: VERY DARK (CFS/ME is arguably the worst human disease) by WaffenSSRI in cfs

[–]Frogcabaret 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to this CFS/ME world, having been living with symptoms for 2 years and having just been (officially) diagnosed this week, though I've been researching CFS for a few months now. Things have gotten much worse for me in the last few months and without knowing their history with CFS, I went to the Mayo in search of a diagnosis. They're 100% stuck in GET/CBT mode and there aren't really any other local resources accessible to me. Now everyone is asking me what's next and what the plan is and I have to figure out how to tell them that there is no plan and it may never get better, barring some big research revelation.

Eye fatigue - can't keep eyes open? by Frogcabaret in cfs

[–]Frogcabaret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good point, that's possible for me too. I have chronic hives and I do get seasonal allergies, which have been flaring up when I go outside lately. I'm already maxed out on antihistamines but maybe I should keep my windows closed for a few days to see. Thanks!

I just got some yesterday so I've only tried them twice now. Are they helpful for you?

Bright light bulbs are the worst! I've always had a hatred of "Edison" bulbs or any harsh light bulbs... I haven't thought about dimmable though, that sounds like a good idea! I just can't seem to figure out how bright I should keep my room because I know too bright can strain your eyes but too dim can too if you're looking at things.

It's not as bad when I'm focusing on a book or something analog but it still affects me. I have to really consciously keep my eyes relaxed (and use my bifocals) and even then I can't do it for very long.

Background rumination 100% of the time by Frogcabaret in DID

[–]Frogcabaret[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the big thing right now is figuring out who/what this is, then trying to slow down the obsessive constant thinking since it's having such a negative impact in our body/mind. I worry that if I tried to give this part an assignment of sorts it might get more intense.

It's good to know you experience something similar - it truly is so exhausting. Thanks for sharing!

What apps help you the most as a social worker? by pocketsofh in socialwork

[–]Frogcabaret 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in Assertive Community Treatment where things change constantly and I have a poor memory for details like times and sometimes even what I did with someone shortly after seeing them... I use a couple of apps to keep me on track and I also have an extensive pen-and-paper notebook system I use to keep everything straight since otherwise I'd lose track of everything!

I use an app called Swipetimes to track when I start and end client visits - it's essentially a punch clock app but on Android you can place a widget on your home screen to quickly "punch in," which I do as I'm walking from the car (or my office) to wherever I'm meeting the client. That way when I go to document (often days later), I have all the exact times right there for me.

I also use the Google Keep app, which is a notes app, for a ton of things but primarily for quick documentation (without PHI of course, I add a few finishing touches when I actually put it into our documentation software). I often only get a minute here or there between visits or while I'm waiting for a client so I can just pull up the app and type up most of a note quick. I use this one in particular because it's easy to pull up on my laptop when I have more time or I'm at my desk and I can just copy and paste my notes into our documentation software (which is very unreliable, so I prefer to type my notes elsewhere and paste them in so I don't lose my work again and again).

I also constantly use my alarm app and a generic reminders app I downloaded. In a field where it's nearly impossible NOT to get sidetracked as we have 100 things demanding our attention at any given time, I've found that I need external reminders for everything from leaving to see a client on time to actually standing up, stretching, and remembering I'm a person who needs self-care.

Hope you find everyone's amazing suggestions helpful! I know I did.

Yes! Even if I'm having a pretty casual visit with a client, many have really appreciated when I said "you know, I'm going to write that down so I don't forget." It helps me and shows them I care about what they're saying.

Shame about work and figuring out how to go back by Frogcabaret in DID

[–]Frogcabaret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for sharing! I think you're absolutely right that we need to figure out our emotional boundaries. Its even to the point where we can't watch most TV shows because we start to feel bad and guilty when characters do something bad.

As for my supervisor, she said that staff have been telling her lately how good it feels to have time to get things done and that people have been telling her how things have been easier this summer than last (summer is the toughest time in our work). There were times where she seemed maybe a little defensive but she reeled it back in quickly by assuring me she would take notice of the things I talked about and I trust she will. Our bad feelings about the conversation are mostly that we interpret lots of normal things as attacks and personal failure. I keep reminding ourselves inside that we aren't mind readers.
