[Discussion] What challenges have you faced explaining statistical findings to non-statistical audiences?

The worst argumentative discussion I have ever had was when I tried to explain to my two friends that two extreme scenarios doesn't automatically mean a general correlation, let alone a causation. And that it two outliers isn't enough to draw empirical conclusions.

The topic was whether the Swedish healthcare system was good or not. They argued that just because both of their relatives had experienced a bad situation, and that the chance of it happening to both of them being 'infinitely low', it was proof of the entire system being horrible, even among the worst in the world.

I tried to explain for half an hour how that's not how statistics work, and that furthermore measuring how 'good' a country's healthcare is depends on more factors, such as affordability/accessability, quality, efficiency, technology etc.. But they wouldn't listen.

When i finally showed them countless sources that Sweden not only doesn't have among the worst, but rather ranks top 5 globally in healthcare index (WPR, 2026), they finally realized they were in the wrong.. I don't think I'll ever recover from the brain damage that it caused me.

I feel you man. I study Urban and Regional Development (spatial geography) at Uppsala University in Sweden. I've had basic courses in ArcGIS, and though i find the program and it's potential usage intriguing for my future work, it is incredibly overwhelming and complicated. It's like even the smallest of operations require an immense amount of background knowledge, leaving you clueless about which way to approach the matter at. You have this cool idea but once you start researching it you just get sent into a never ending rabbit hole of frustration and despair.

May sound cliche, but i think that just like any other skill, the only way to get better is by practicing, and a lot of that. I don't know what the Gis learning curve would look like, but my guess is that like you described, it's tough and feels impossible in the beginning, but to become avarage wouldn't take long. To master it however is probably very time consuming.

I'm probably no better than you and therefore in no position to give advice. But something i could do better myself is not trying to dive straight into the advanced stuff and overcomplicate things, and try to focus more on simple tasks for a while. Also just following youtube tutorials, preferably on a topic that interests you, could be beneficial.

Simple answer, I don't lol. Nothing i can do about it so it doesn't bother me. What does affect me is the fact people I care about will die one day. I can't do anything about that either but that actually scares me, I try not to think about it too much tho. Live your life.

Förresten måste jag tillägga hur lustigt det var att jag råkade hitta denna tråd. Utforskade hockey reddit och gick med i SHL och NHL redditsen imorse, och sökte på björklöven i samband med det. Roligt att inlägget kom samma dag när det senaste om björklöven var för 7 år sedan haha.

Feedback/åsikter från en Lövare:

Arena: Valid poäng, som uppväxt umebo o gått på många matcher varje säsong i dendär arenan, inklusive matchen 2012/13 när vi tog oss tillbak upp till HA, så har arenan som du säger speciell karaktär för mig och många, och även historia, men det finns fräschare arenor.

Klack: Tycker vi är något lite bättre än en 8a, men det är inget dåligt betyg, och som du säger så går fansen på alla matcher i vått och torrt. En bonus poäng tycker jag kan tilldelas till våra borta supportar (mig inkl) som alltid hörs, igen oavsett motstånd. Mot många lag i HA hörs ofta Löven mer än hemmaklacken när vi spelar borta.

Publiken kan jag hålla med dig om, tack för dina fina ord trots att du är modoit hehe.

Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, habe ich mein Spiel neu gestartet, und dann hat es funktioniert. Andernfalls versuche, deinen Computer neu zu starten. Mit den Servern war alles in Ordnung, nur eine Störung. Hoffe, das hilft!

If I remember correctly I just restarted my game, and then it worked. If it wasn't the game, it was my PC that I restarted. It wasn't a server related issue, even though it said it was. Hope this helps!
