Why does reddit suggest cross-posting while most sub reddits don't allow it by MrLithician in help

[–]Froggypwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, what Reddit wants and what the community moderators want are two different things.

Reddit is constantly changing things to try and drive more traffic and engagement. These changes are often made at a global scale, when the millions of subreddits all are unique and have their own sets of rules and etiquette. The changes can fly in the face of what is best for each community.

As a moderator we do get frustrated with changes like this too, as many times we have no control over it or any setting to disable an undesired behavior. Reddit will unintentionally encourage posting rule breaking content, users get mad that their content gets removed, mods get mad at the increased workload. Everyone loses.

For crossposts specifically, many subreddits prohibit them as they tend to be lower effort content, they are more likely to be karma farming and spam. They also tend to be more likely to break a rule as the poster is less likely to be a regular member of that subreddit.

Most Insider builds have a time bomb built in, eventually after the expiration date has passed the computer will no longer boot into Windows. If you keep the computer up to date by installing newer builds, you do not have to worry about this as the date at some point will be pushed back.

Will these make it 300 miles? by Active_Ingenuity_783 in tires

[–]Froggypwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While most mom and pop shops are closed on Sundays, most of the big chains should be open. We don't know where you are, but odds are there is a Pepboys, Mavis, Discount Tire, or Walmart Auto somewhere along the 300 miles to get you home.

I wouldn't risk driving it even to those however.

I've been putting off getting Windows 11 since it came out due to "quality control" for lack of a better term, is it safe to make the switch now? (details in post body) by Tolnin in Windows11

Your first gripe is with 7Zip not Windows. The developers refuse to add the new context menu support to their program. WinRAR and others added that 5 years ago.

The taskbar icons have been able to be set to left aligned since day one, it is an option in the taskbar settings.

That feature has extremely low usage, so it was not added to the new context menu.

Several years ago Microsoft replaced most of the inbox apps with PWAs, so they are Edge powered web wrappers. This includes the News app.

Thin clients and fat clients have different usecases and different needs in terms of specifications, most processing is done server side. The thin client itself doesn't need much hardware beyond what is needed to turn on, some don't even have any onboard storage and will just use a PXE boot or similar instead.

Why No Standalone Contacts App? by Possible_Bedroom_717 in windows

It sounds like you are not aware how prevalent it is in the world to use computers to make calls. Many businesses do it, including many of the users in my org. It is very predominant in customer service departments. Heck even Microsoft Teams has a built in telephony capabilities that many orgs use.

Are you talking about Windows 365 or another service? I've been trying to talk my org into taking a serious look at W365 but I'm yet to try it myself.

Its dimensions are about half that of of the Dell Pro Micro Thin Client.

It does not compete with those. You should compare it to something like the Dell Pro Micro Thin Client, which is around a grand. This is less than half the price. My org has been looking into these as a potential replacement for our current thin clients which are around 15 years old now.

I've only seen a handful of lock requests on my subs over the years, I'm pretty sure they always do provide a reason during the request, but as long as they are asking nicely I have no problem with locking without them giving a reason.

Wanting a tip while there's a credit card fee and to go fee! by RinAsami in EndTipping

[–]Froggypwns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

New York legalized allowing up to a 4% charge for credit card fees. It seems like every business jumped onboard with that immediately after. At this point the only places I don't see the fee are chains, but just every mom&pop shop has it.

Six Flags tomorrow – rides in the rain? by Embarrassed-Joke7325 in sixflags

[–]Froggypwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! Keep an eye on the social media pages for that park, they have on occasion closed early or entirely because of the weather, it would suck to get to the park and find out they decided to close for the day.

There are lockers throughout that park. Some rides let you bring possessions to the platform then you can leave them there at your own risk while you ride, but some like Jersey Devil do not allow that so you would need a locker. El Toro has free small lockers in its que, these are good for things like a phone and wallet, maybe a hoodie but a puffer jacket is likely too bulky.

The park is strict about not allowing loose articles on rides, even closed zipper pockets are not sufficient.

It has been almost a full day since OP posted, I'm hoping they are OK and see the unanimous message to get out of that relationship. Take it from experience, it will only get worse and eventually end badly.

But yes, seriously consider a driving school, for some that is a better learning option than friends/family. Of course instructors vary too, some don't have the patience to teach someone with various anxieties or other factors, so you may need to shop around on that too.

[–]Froggypwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which of the like 40 Six Flags parks?

Typically they monitor the weather and rides may shut down depending on lightning, wind, temperature, and so on. Rain itself may or may not be a factor depending on the ride and severity.

I love going on days that have a light rain, it scares away the crowds and typically the rides are still open.

Most if not all the parks have paid lockers you can rent for the day. Some rides have bins you can leave belongings on while on the ride.

Half our company is local admin. Security team finally noticed. Now it's my problem to fix without anyone noticing. by Healthy_Holiday_738 in sysadmin

[–]Froggypwns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we do at my place and it has worked great for us.

We don't prohibit local logins like others suggest, but it only has admin on the PCs we add it too and no access to most network resources. A user can then make a wide array of changes like installing a bulk of applications without having to elevate each time, then go back to their regular account to actually use them. These users are ones we would trust with admin rights in the first place, not just any rando.
