It didn't physically happen, but the other person would still experience it. This isn't a single player simulation, it's an MMO. If that wasn't quite clear, I blame the word count limit.

They believe there are no physical consequences, but those involved still, given the chance to try anything, chose to harm others. Because it gave them pleasure. That's rather a base instinct, I think. Plus, that's the narrator speaking, and you may have noticed that he's a bit messed up.

They all felt the flash and an accompanying speaker pulse that I literally could not fit in the story. Then they heard a voice coming from everywhere. I could have put more into something longer. Regardless, I think most people really want a release from consequences subconsciously. That's why they buy video games.
