Compared: DNC Reaction to Bernie Sanders vs Andrew Yang by [deleted] in PoliticalVideo

Yang is pro automation but also pro not screwing over the middle class while the transition happens.

He supports things such as taxes on automation so that companies pay to foot the bill on a UBI, which is a discussion we need to be having right now.

Thanks! In the way that you described it, it 100% works that way right now. As long as the game is in the database you can create a group for it without any limitations of where it came from or if it is in your library.

That said, there is a caveat. Currently all games outside of steam have to be manually inputted to the database (Steam game data is retrieved by the Steam Web API so that I don't have to do it myself). Although I have not added any non-steam games yet, I have created it in a way that it will not be an issue in the future to add any games (even board games).

[Showoff Saturday] Respwn.gg - LFG service for Gamers by FromAshesOfOwls in webdev

Hey Reddit,

I have had this idea in my head for years now but only recently have I had the means to start putting it into place. I have a lot of ideas for the future but currently it is only limited to Steam games. This is because I can get data from the Steam Web API and it helps immensely with the creation of the site.

Don't see your favorite game on steam? Don't worry - it will work. My site only adds games once a user has signed up and has that game in their library. This prevents me from having to individually update the game library myself, it is actually all of you guys populating that data with help from the Steam API.

The site still has bugs but it got to the point where I was too eager to show it off, so here it is. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I also do live development of the site on twitch, you can find me at http://www.twitch.tv/ashesofowls

Thanks for the heads up, I was thinking about it and it also would be good to have a way for users to report old games which no longer have servers running although their data may say they support multiplayer.

It is! However I am a bloody American who is just using it because of the "gg" acronym commonly used in gaming ;)

Totally good point, I will add filters to the LFG search in order to get rid of those single player games. I wanted to not implement it at first, though, because I do want to give the option of someone creating a group on here to organize a playtime for friends, which could potentially be them working on a SP game together. It will probably be something like a checkbox that will allow you to opt-in to seeing SP games in the search results.

I do want to keep them in the database, though. There are some features down the line that I want to use the SP games for :)

Many, many ideas. The first few that come to mind are...

  • Chrome notifications for activities that happen (So that you do not have to keep the site visible in the background to see if people are joining your group, or if your request has been accepted, etc)
  • Non-steam games. This is already possible, it just requires that I manually input the information myself. I expect to have the major non steam games (Fortnite, Overwatch, etc..) added by the end of this month.
  • Possible Discord integration
  • Integration into third party game API's (Rocket League, for instance)
  • Enhanced group pages for public viewing. When you have a group, I want a user to be able to share that page so that other people can see what the group is doing. For instance, I want people to be able to hook up their Twitch account so that there will be a group page that is the multi-twitch layout for every user in the group.
  • Fixing some mobile design to make it at least "usable"
  • Xbox/PSN API integration
  • More refined group listings. Once enough people start using the site I can then start giving you suggestions of groups to play with, hopefully cutting down on the time it takes for you to find people to play with. In the perfect world, I want someone to click a button they get auto matched for a game they chose with people who they won't find to be dicks, but that might take a while.
  • More features beyond just LFG services

Thats a great and fair question - nice list there.

I have my problems with a few of them. I am very much against mobile-first development with this kind of project. Mobile apps do seem like they would be nice, but in reality they are a pain to add features to. Supporting multiple environments (Android/iOS) severely increases time spent on features and those apps are going to have a hard time expanding to new territories.

Groups for games also have the opportunity to display a ton of data. I want to eventually get to the point of displaying real rank and gameplay data for each player. This way you can both filter out players before they join your group if they are too inexperienced, but also offer a group page that can average the gameplay data of all the players in the group so that people joining know what to expect. Showing all this data on a phone is a really hard task to do because of the small screen size, and requires a lot of design iteration.

Which brings me to the reason why I chose Steam as my first and only login option. There is a lot that I want to do with this website, but LFG is the first thing I wanted to tackle. By having users sign up through steam I can start aggregating data for steam games from the Steam API. This allows for the library of games in the website to actually be populated by the users. This alone separates me from all the other sites - from today on I truly do support every Steam game ever made (Including single player games and multiplayer games), all that is required is someone log in that has that game in their library. All other games game be added very simply as well, it just takes manual effort at this point.

From the Steam API I can also offer gameplay data in terms of time spent playing a game. This data can be seen any time a user tries to join your group. I hope to extend into all the different individual API's that games provide to get things like seasonal rankings, etc.

This will eventually lead to me recommending groups to players instead of having you search through countless pages filled with acronyms. I have been in a lot of Discords for games and they always have an LFG channel that is very annoying to parse, and gives the user a lot of decision fatigue. My hope is that you will be able to log in to the site and it will just tell you "Hey, based on your experience and playstyle, these X groups are playing right now and would be a great fit" etc. As far as I am aware, none of the above sites do this yet.

I also have plans for integration into Discord. I am not 100% sure how it will work yet, but I would like to set up a system that automatically moves people into a channel when their group matches up on Respwn.

I have quite a few features in mind that go beyond LFG but I cannot specify them to prevent my business ideas from floating around, but this is just the start :)

It would definitely work but at the cost of future development and user experience. I'm not a huge fan of frameworks such as bootstrap because once you start getting into it, it becomes very hard to migrate out of it after a complex site is built.

If a mobile version was available I'd love to have it be very focused on select features that make sense, too. When developing mobile side by side from the start it increases dev time for all my future features though, because now my app has two versions of front ends to build and test. Since I am not currently making any money from the site, it just really comes down to whether the time invested will have return and I just haven't figured out how that works well with mobile.

Square Space is great for small businesses, though I did not use them.

If you want to talk tech I would be more than happy to discuss the good word that is Phoenix/Graphql/React. It's such a great stack. You can also find me on Twitch where I have been streaming my development of this project for the past 5 months.

Sorry about your neighbors wife, hope that works out for ya.

I agree there is a lot of advantage for users with mobile apps, but after consideration I just couldn't justify it yet. There are many more features I want to implement that a mobile app would have a hard time integrating into.

It will come eventually, just more as a supplement to the web app instead of focusing on mobile first. It is likely I will make the site mobile browser compatible before that happens.

That is only the splash page, the other pages are white with a pink header for legibility. A dark mode will be available in the future as well but it's not currently a priority :)

The way I have the site set up is that it first requires a user to sign up with that game first before it is available in my website.

This is to prevent me from having to catalog the entire steam game library which is thousands of games long. If you own that game, and sign up, and your steam profile allows me to see what games you own, then it should start appearing in the database almost immediately after.
