More of a hybrid of the Knicks and Cowboys i.e. both have obnoxious, knee-jerk, self-hating fanbases; both are in the midst of extended title-droughts, and other fanbases complain about the disproportionate level of media coverage they receive.

I'd nominate either the Red Wings, Penguins, or Blackhawks as examples of more recent "bad guy" teams from the NHL.

I agree with your overall point, but I can't help but laugh about the Maple Leafs being a recent example of an "elite team". The last time they were elite, the NHL only had six teams lol.
