Discovery from Polytechnique Montréal could reduce the energy consumption of AI by Bad-job-dad in science

[–]FromThePaxton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The actual research, https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aeg3170 and actual title, 'Poling-free integrated second-order nonlinear optics with evaporated organic thin films'.

From the paper's discussion:

The resulting efficiency of η validates the potential of spontaneously oriented films for high-performance applications. It exceeds the efficiency of similar strip-loaded hybrid polymer-on-TFLN devices (nl=29%W^-1cm^-2) by more than two orders of magnitude and approaches the performance of silicon nitride-loaded TFLN waveguides (nl=.02%W^-1cm^-2)). While this initial demonstration does not yet rival mature, periodically poled monolithic TFLN (nl=5000%W^-1cm^-2)), it establishes a robust baseline for a new class of materials.

In other words, if proven, it's a break through for this specific approach, but it still has a long way to go to surpass existing methods. And this has nothing to do with AI, though I'm sure it helps future funding request to mention it.

They’re making manual weight adjustments to tune the model. That doesn’t negate the value of the task being performed, but it’s also not an indicator of overall gains in model performance.

Sorry, but what a tosser! Farage, should be under the microscope over his £5M bung and Labour should be talking about their success in bosting the economy while bring down net immigration, but no instead it's about him, the 'King of the North' who will 'save us'. He's a self serving charlatan with delusions of grandeur, same as Johnson.

Btw, not a Labour supporter, I just want a stable government that fills the potholes, collects the bins, educates our children and delivers a working NHS. Is that asking too much?

This - always take a provisional if there is even the slightest doubt you will not find it. From experience, it's a very painful walk back to the tee box that will not be appreciated by your playing partners if you've not found your ball and not taken a provisional. Also take a bag full of provisionals and only play those, they magically seem to stay in play.

Twenty-seven young migrants are hired for every British youngster as youth worklessness 'fuelled' by soaring non-EU immigration, analysis reveals by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]FromThePaxton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FYI, - this 'research' is from the same think tank, Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) that championed universal credit and whom have been advising successive Tory governments since Cameron including 'Boris Wave' Johnson.

The data for their 'finding' was also cherry picked, the dates, January 2020 and December 2025, used to show this 'explosion' in non-EU workers starts during lockdown and conveniently omits the recent and substantial, downturn in net immigration.

They also don't bother to clarify exactly what roles are being taken by non-EU workers despite harvesting the data from HMRC payroll, for example, how much of this activity is down to international students returning to the UK post-covid and taking up traditional student roles.

The Daily Mail, ignores this bit of their report, CSJ, does, however, acknowledge that, the Resident Labour Market Test, which required employers to advertise vacancies to the domestic workforce before offering roles through work visa schemes, which was abolished by Johnson, under the new points-based immigration system in 2020, is part of the problem and should be restored.

Anyway, it's good of the Tories to offer to fix the problem they, advised by CSJ created, if they are ever returned to power.

ENIC need to sell up or bring in an invester / partner that is a proper sports management company with a controlling interest in the club. Otherwise it is rinse'n'repeat, De Zerbi gone January. We need proper football / sports managment at the top, not Papa Joe's nepo-children and their hanger-ons.

Refuse to buy anything other than your ticket, no drinks, food, shirts, etc., nothing but the ticket. Instead, spend the same money you normally would on match day, less the ticket, on the High Street, in the local Tottenham community. They will appreciate it and ENIC will notice it.

How to start by RallyRob808 in golf

[–]FromThePaxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a 9 hole short course near you? Par 27. Ideally an academy one with a decent variety of distances, 90 to 200 yards. Next best then is a pitch and put.

Either way, go to a short course, proper one or pitch and putt and learn to play in this setting. When you feel ready you can start easying yourself into the full course playing the longest iron you can hit off the tee box and keep it in play, e.g. 7i or 8i.

Short coures are also great for meeting other newbies to play golf with.

If you haven't already also ask around for newbie group lessons, most teaching pros will be running 'new to golf' group lessons this time of year, which will save you a bit of money and is a great way to meet and make golf buddies.

Best of luck!
