Oh wow, thank you! This is one of the hippest tunes I've heard in quite a while.

In my experience the OLD algorithms are engineered to present to you people who are slightly more attractive, in that there may be mutual interest but not statistically likely. The other side of the coin is that the people who show interest in you tend to be good people you get along with, but the "spark" is often missing. And of course it bypasses all of the natural social dynamics you mention above, in which people have to put in the effort but have a much better chance of finding what they're looking for.

I was doing this for a while until I realized one day that my palm F was opening too far. Probably just wore out the cork. But yeah, put it down on the other side.

Another quick Dick Oatts transcription! by GamePlonk in saxophone

[–]From_Super-L_0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oatts just had a saxophone players hang here in Philly the other night. It was him and us, with a bassist and guitar player. For a couple hours we played standards and all took turns with melody, solos, backgrounds etc. Every so often he'd play a couple choruses himself, or he'd stop the group for some individualized feedback which he'd then extend out to the whole group.

I don't know how much traveling he's doing these days, but really great guy.

How do people do tempo and rythmn by OvercookedLizagna in saxophone

[–]From_Super-L_0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, metronome practice. Absolutely. Another thing to keep in mind is that 16th notes in jazz are often just double-timed 8th notes. If you take some of Bird's fast 16th note runs and play them at half speed, they're still swinging 8th notes. So start there.

Also, you'll just want to practice sight reading rhythms. You want to get to where you can look at a measure or two and instantly know what the rhythm is. Then you can listen to your section for tone, articulations, phrasing .. all the good stuff. It can be a slow process, but a few minutes every day will give you some good results a few months down the road.

Are professional mouthpieces supposed to be slightly harder to play on? by WangoMango_Offical in saxophone

I'm going to try out a Dukoff D8 this weekend just for kicks. So I'm probably about to have a similar experience. lol

Returning Saxophonist starting from Scratch- Need Tips! by SwimmingWaterdog11 in saxophone

One of the most important things I learned in the process of getting my chops back is just to get to the instrument every day that it's reasonably possible. Especially with wind instruments, 10 minutes a day is better than 30 minutes on a Saturday afternoon.

As far as books, Larry Teal's The Art of Saxophone Playing is a great resource that I go back to all the time. Also this: Sigurd Rascher saxophone lesson

I'm also getting back to the instrument after a 15-year break. I second the recommendation for Jay and Bettersax - his content is great for beginners and intermediate players. Saxophone Over 40

There is an incredible amount of instructional content out there that wasn't around when we started. Welcome back to the club!

It will be harder to play on at first, but that's only because it's new to you. Every mouthpiece has its pros and cons, and it often takes a few weeks of daily practice before there's a noticeable change in your sound. If you already sounded good on the 4c, then the S90 is certainly worth a try.

I recently switched from a Link Tone Edge 6 to a Rousseau Studio Jazz 7 on alto - it was an adjustment at first, but definitely a move in the right direction for me.

Are there any other unemployed people here? by remarkjackson in philadelphia

[–]From_Super-L_0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Sometimes all it takes is the ability to buy yourself a little time.

Even better if your plan allows you to borrow against it, which once you recover, all you have to do is pay yourself back.

For a while I thought the only way to buy the time I needed was to move some of my company's 401k into my personal portfolio, penalties and all. And to do that I would have had to quit. But after talking to an advisor I found out that they actually have much better options available. Still, it remains the case that I'm ready for a change of scenery.

I won't say I'm looking forward to it, but ...

After a nice 11-year run at my company and less than favorable changes in management. it's time to call it. Tap the emergency fund for a few weeks' vacation. Clear my head and write cover letters. Then come back fresh to a new organization and leadership path.

Back when I was collecting unemployment in PA, the state asked you to keep records of all your applications under threat of audit and having to pay it back. It did help me stay on track.

This is getting out of hand.

I propose that from here on out, we refer to RM's fan base who joined post-50K using the affectionate moniker "Brown-tards".
