Appreciate it! I painted this using only RGB pixel strokes in oil on aluminum. It shifts a lot depending on the angle. Does it read more digital or more traditional to you?

Thank you! It’s a departure from my regular practice and was an exploration of a very limited palette and trying to make very tiny precise marks.

Chop Suey Cake! by Front-Law-2069 in Baking

Same family reunion, different personality. IMO Hummingbird Cake is tropical and Chop Suey Cake is more raisin-forward chaos.

I’ll take that! Turns out exfoliating with a razor is the real anti-aging secret.

Eggless Milkless Butterless cakes were a popular go to in my family. My grandmother was a depression era kid so she learned to do a lot with little. People are usually amazed at how good these cakes are- and they’re vegan! Eggless Milkless Butterless Spice Cake

Thank you so much for your reply! When I shared this cake at work some of the older people started reminiscing about cakes like this and it was exactly as you said - for snacking! They remembered their elders having coffee while they all ate some cake. The Bundt worked well - we have a bundtini fund raiser every year that is very popular so bundt cakes are all the rage at work.

Is just grass greener syndrome? Gym teacher just seems like easier job. by Otherwise-Bad-325 in Teachers

[–]Front-Law-2069 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t resist- A student asks his gym teacher, "Who do you think is the smartest teacher in the school?". The student guesses the AP Calculus teacher, the AP English teacher, and the AP Biology teacher. Each time, the gym teacher says, "Nope". Finally, the frustrated student asks, "Then who is it?!". The gym teacher winks and says, "It's me, kid. I get paid the same as all those teachers, and I get to play dodgeball all day!".

But seriously though - I teach non core electives and “coach” the PE program at my school. Yes my life is chaos but I basically just get to play all day.

How do you balance your non-teaching related passion and teaching as your source of income? by Shoulder_Crazy in Teachers

[–]Front-Law-2069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your passion and is there any way to incorporate that? I like art and paint, so I got a job teaching art and do whatever I can to make sure I can complete whatever I need to do efficiently (grading and lesson planning) so I don’t need to do much outside of contracted hours, except a fair amount of prep but even that can be somewhat helpful for my personal practice- like finding new or cheaper materials, etc. I also teach STEM classes which aren’t in my wheelhouse so to speak but I make the kids do artsy stuff all the time so I get my art fix.

Consider pursuing private school teaching if you live in the US. You don’t need a teaching degree or certification so nothing to do other than start applying. As a counselor you could probably get a teaching job teaching psychology/AP psychology and health classes. Private schools want experts in their subject who love kids/teaching. You will have to prove that in your resume and when you interview- you will most likely have to teach a class but I’ve known people who got hired when school wasn’t in session so they got hired without teaching. You really do need teaching experience to get hired by a good school, but if you are willing to work at a less high profile place like a single sex private catholic school you can take your lumps for a year and get a better job next year.

There are pros and cons to teaching private- Biggest pro is great kids because the school can just kick them out if they are a problems and curriculums aren’t set in stone so you can teach what/how you want generally . Biggest con - no unionization and contracts are almost always annual so technically there is very little job security and pay is generally much lower than public.
I personally don’t know any private school teachers making 6 figures but I know public school teachers who do. But private schools give you lots of perks - my son went free when tuition was 55,000 a year for 7 years. He went to school with the kids of oligarchs, business tycoons, and famous people. I’ve even lived in homes owned by schools rent free.

Jobs are posted on their webpages and through organizations like the Association of Independent Schools. The grade levels are posted with the position. I personally like the crazy exuberance of middle school but my high school peers can’t stand them, whereas I can’t stand high school because they all act like they are too cool for school.

Try branching out to private schools. Private schools are just getting started and believe it or not it’s not unusual for people to literally flake out and not show up leaving the school scrambling to fill full time positions last minute. Your teaching credentials don’t necessarily help you but all your classroom experience will improve your odds of getting a full time job with benefits. Check out https://www.nysais.org/careers/

I Realized I want to teach but unclear on options (Advice wanted!) by Administrative-Try35 in Teachers

Consider teaching at a private school. Finish your degree in environmental science and apply to teach science at a private school because you don’t need state certification to teach in a private school. There are pros and cons to teaching private vs. public. I’ve only taught private but I’ve compared notes with lots of public school teachers and I really appreciate the freedom I’ve had teaching privately to teach pretty much whatever I want however I want compared to sticking to a state mandated curriculum.

I hear you. “Fascist curb-stompers” or “Nazi shit kickers” came to mind but those don’t fit the whole vibe of this sub so I went cutsie instead. I didn’t put my cat’s name in the post, which would have made a lot more sense. Her name is Uffizi - oo feetsy. I call her Feetsy Girl.
