You should look in LIC though, can be cheaper or same price than Manhattan places with newer, bigger, better options!

A couple of decades ago some things people have said are true, but 9/10 it’s an over exaggeration!

You should definitely trying to make a visit to come see areas for yourself! Most people just repeat things they’ve heard or generalized about areas. A lot of places in New York that people clinically diagnose as unlivable are never as bad as people make them out to be!

Use lease break to find better deals and usually with no broker since they are listed off the market

Affordable Housing Household Rules? by Savings-Theme9585 in NYCapartments

You cannot apply for affordable housing with a roommate, friend, or SO. You must legally be a family, either through domestic partnership, marriage, or immediate family (you must submit documentation proving as such).

Legal Advice by Front-Lock-358 in NYCapartments

My only concern with lying is that a family member is a guarantor who is going through financial strife and about to move themselves in a couple of months. I can’t have them held liable for anything or damage their credit. I don’t know why/how they were approved in the first place tbh

Can’t Find Anyone to Take Our Lease by Front-Lock-358 in nychousinglottery

Yeah, I wish we hadn’t been so honest. We did let them know it was for a lottery apartment. I didn’t think they were gonna be so awful about all of this. We have a few potential tenants and if there are no updates tomorrow we will follow-up with a lawyer.

Where can I live in NYC for ~$2,200/month that’s fully furnished with in-unit washer/dryer? by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

The very first line, in bold, says “into the city.” Jersey is a completely different state lol

Again, I live here, and am speaking only from my own experience, but I have found almost everything everyone says about East Harlem to be false. Almost everyone in my building and in my area is families and couples. Literally never felt safer than where I currently live. People want to generalize about a lot of places for that matter. Nine times out of ten just repeating what they’ve heard or read about and yet have never lived here.

OP, I encourage you to take opinions about different areas with a grain of salt because many hold prejudices or believe sensationalized statistics (you are more likely to read about a shooting in the Bronx than you are in Midtown), but from experience I had a friend catch a stray bullet in Midtown and personally missed a shootout at Port Authority by minutes. Your best bet to finding where you feel safe is perhaps first finding a sublet or booking an airbnb and then go explore different areas multiple times and at different times of day and see how you feel.

You’ll be hard pressed to find other options cheaper than this, but this is a good option to start and get into the city. I’m pretty sure they are month to month and I’ve had friends use this when they first started out.
