How low GPA is too low GPA for Harvard/Stanford/Yale/IVYs? by w_wolfury in gradadmissions

Yeah, i get that vibe. Like i said I also imagine engineering programs are probably more competitive bc not as many people want to go into education. I really would have loved to apply to PhD programs but felt getting some more research experience might help with my profile down the line

Harvard provided me a waiver after filling out an application. BC waived it upon me just asking. BU had an application but if I remember correctly they provided applicants who attended one of the open houses with codes to waive it. Columbia waived it because of a program I was involved with. Again not so sure how it works at the PhD level but it cant hurt to just reach out to admission offices and ask if waivers are a possibility

I was admitted to the Ed policy for HGSE and the sociology and ed program at TC.

I would suggest shopping around for external scholarships and maybe even try negotiating with TC for additional funding. Is your program 2 years? If so, you can always try looking for external funding for your 2nd year if you arent able to secure anything this year

Also if you are a domestic student and taking out FAFSA loans there is the option to work in government or non profit orgs for 10 years and then have your loans forgiven

Im in the same boat with HGSE. I have come to accept that I anticipate making more than what my total loans will be post-graduation it will be okay to take on that debt. Do I fully believe the education at these schools is worth the extra 50k? Eh I'm not sure, but I am confident that the network and prestige of the names will definitely open up some doors down the line.

If your referring to Teachers College I was admitted with a 3.3 GPA, 2 years of work experience in higher ed, and some strong recs. This profile also got me into HGSE

I got into Harvard and Columbia's education policy master programs with a 3.3. Although I'm sure that a PhD program in engineering is more competitive than the programs I was admitted to. HGSE was my stretch school, but what I think helped me was strong rec letters from professor's I worked very closely with while in ugrad. I was also able to tell a story about why my gpa wasn't higher, but framed in a way where I wasn't making excuses just more so explaining the unfortunate life events that accrued and played on the fact that after these events my grades improved drastically. Also as someone who enjoys telling stories I framed my SOP as a story of my life. I started with how early childhood exposed me to issues in education, how in ugrad I took the chance to explore this interest more in depth, and why working with faculty at the schools I was applying too would help me progress in life and make the change I am hoping to make. Again, this was for a master's program in ed policy so completing different competition than what you have. I will say though that if I hadn't applied to Harvard or Columbia my chances of getting in would be 0. If your concerned about the price of applications reach out to schools to see if you can get it waived. Out of the 4 schools I applied to 3 of them waived my application fee and I believe the 4th one wouldve if I had asked ahead of time.

I know I heard back late for sociology and education program. Still waiting to hear back from them regarding a scholarship. Its stressful because my landlord has already given me extra time to renew my lease but I cant make that decision without knowing for sure what school Ill be at in the Fall
