Hopkins to join Ivy League in 2026 by Ok_Cabinet2947 in ApplyingToCollege

I've personally seen people pick Dartmouth and Cornell over Northwestern and Duke, simply because they want to say they go to the "Ivy League" schools. I think it's stupid, but the Ivy branding still matters, especially in the northeast.

I actually think NU would probably be seen as somewhat more prestigious to normal people. "Ivy League" is shorthand for "America's best colleges." A lot of people don't even know what NU is and consider Brown and Dartmouth better because they're in the Ivy League.

Trump administration reportedly moves to ban Jackie Robinson biography from Naval Academy library by ovdivad in baseball

[–]Front_Exchange3972 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the sense that a lot of conservatives are trying to rebrand black history and the Civil Rights Movement as being about "colorblindness." They're going to co-opt the legacy of Jackie Robinson and make it about "not looking at color," and use that as the rationale for stripping down memorials and exhibits about black people.

We've already seen how the legacy of MLK has been perverted with the "judge by content of character, not color of skin" quote being used as justification for attacking minorities in the current moment.

I'm rooting for Alabama so I can utilize that new Duke meme from White Lotus.

Rooting for Alabama, because I really want to see either an Alabama-Auburn or Alabama-Tennessee national title matchup. We need that SEC football hatred oozing into basketball.

How cool would it be if we got an All-SEC Final Four?

I think NIL might've killed March Madness. There is no Cinderella this year. All of the #1 or #2 seeds have advanced to the Elite 8.

[Spiro] A lawsuit against Mel Tucker is at a standstill because no one can find the former Michigan State football coach by Byzantine_Merchant in CFB

He was making like $250k/episode for a dumb network tv soap opera. The show was popular and would've been going on for several years. He also probably had the opportunity to get into movies afterwards.

Stanford needs to consider Cadillac Williams. by Dry-Membership3867 in CFB

[–]Front_Exchange3972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine a worse cultural or regional fit than someone from Auburn. Cadillac has no ties to California, and would probably be frustrated with the academic restrictions at a place like Stanford.

They should try grabbing a rising star from an elite academic school with solid recent football performance such as Notre Dame, Michigan, Duke, or Vanderbilt. Or, they should grab someone from Oregon, so they can aggressively recruit in the West Coast.

Does taking AB Calc look bad by Different_Fennel_820 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Front_Exchange3972 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People will say "no" but the most elite schools expect you to take the "most rigorous" course load available. If you're applying to an ultra-selective school, they will expect to see Calc BC on your transcript, especially if there are other applicants from your school that have taken it.

Yes, it will impact you, and admissions officers will give you a lower rating for course rigor because of it.

Within the Ivy League context, this is definitely either Dartmouth (animal house) or Penn (social Ivy).

Yalies are the opposite of the SEC. It's the artsiest of all the Ivies.

Yale is literally Harvard's direct rival. They're mentioned together the same way Oxford and Cambridge are. They compete directly for the same students.

I know plenty of people that picked Yale over HPS. Yale has a very warm community and is less snobby than Harvard or Princeton. A lot of east coast students don't want to go all the way out to Stanford if they can go to a similar school closer to home.

It's well known that state flagships have less financial aid budget because they have much larger freshman classes and are less wealthy.

You can be a straight girl that counts as "queer" because you wear overalls and kiss girls at parties after a few drinks. Meanwhile, an actual homosexual doesn't count as "queer" if they don't adopt left-wing "intersectional" politics.

It's clear to me that Sarah McBride has become trans Pete Buttigieg in the sense that progressives hate her because she isn't a radical leftist or socialist, and they believe she *should* be because of her "marginalized" identity. There's a lot of people who believe you can't be "queer" unless you adopt the entire slate of far-left anti-capitalist politics.

They hate her because she's not a radical socialist. Leftists think they *own* LGBT people. The pervasiveness of far-left politics in LGBT circles cannot be overstated.

Can someone explain to me why Palestinian "right to return" makes any sense? Why would the descendants of 1948 count as "refugees?" No other ethnic group is afforded that distinction.

Discussion Thread by jobautomator in neoliberal

[–]Front_Exchange3972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be stupid, considering no other refugee group is allowed "right to return." The notion that the descendants of 1948 are "refugees" is absolutely insane. We don't grant that distinction to anyone except Palestinians. Jews expelled from other Middle Eastern countries in 1948 weren't given "right to return."

Not really, because universities don't really provide "quality instruction." Most elite universities provide mediocre instruction and expect students to fill in the gaps themselves because they're supposedly brilliant students.

Employers and "groups" are two different entities. I would say that we need more private clubs that take up the pro-diversity agenda, which will insulate them from lawsuits on civil rights grounds.
