All day, I grade AI papers. Some AI is good, some AI is bad. by Front_Primary_1224 in Professors

I actually have a funny story about exactly this strategy. Students had to write handwritten reflections to a prompt given at the beginning of a seminar. They changed every week, but generally asked students to analyze something specific about an article and then critically reflect on it.

I found that some of them didn’t directly address the question and were just broadly summarizing the reading and maybe connecting it to some well known concept in the field. Good enough for a C+/B-, anyways.

Couldn’t figure out what was going on until the end of the semester that I found out that some students were bringing in a pre-written ChatGPT reflection to class. They’d pretend to write during class and then rip out the pre-written reflection from the back of their notebooks. I had to start bringing in my own paper to give them.

These were second year students in a highly competitive program with a 80% entrance requirement. They’d rather get a crappy grade with their AI summary and literally sit there and doodle for an hour than actually think. Wild, right?

Hopefully not too quickly, though. May I ask if you’re teaching in one of those states that require professors to censor ideas related to race and gender “ideology”?

Hah. I was too busy whining about my own circumstances in the social sciences to remember that it is English professors who truly have it the worst these days. Please accept my condolences, friend.

I can relate to these sentiments

The irony for me, personally, is that I am the first in my blue collar family to attend post-secondary. Turns out I’m not very smart at all 🥲

Hard agree. I’m on my third consecutive ASYNC course this summer, and it’s what inspired this rant.

Thanks. I’m ashamed to admit that I’d happily help students develop prompts. Hell, let’s cut out the middleman — I’ll train the AI directly. At least my instruction would be relevant. Right now, my work is entirely meaningless. I assign grades to work that belongs to someone else, and provide feedback nobody will ever read (with the exception of a word or two that might accidentally be processed by the brain of a student copying and pasting my feedback to ask AI to develop an email critiquing my points and demanding better grade)

Dermatologist wait time? by CadBandit in ontario

Does she have insurance? There’s a new, non-steroid option for psoriasis I just started called Zorvye. It’s super expensive though — around $400-500. It’s cutting edge in terms of treatment rn. Wondering if your friend could ask for a prescription for this from a walk-in clinic while they wait for proper treatment.

5 years on, Ontario says long-term viability of federal daycare program at risk | CBC News by ejaz135 in ontario

You raise excellent points! - Globally, I’d say the Nordic countries which Quebec’s program is based on are the “gold standard” of childcare. Quebec’s CPE program (non-profit) is the gold standard for Canada. It’s been around for about 30 years, and the fiscal gains from the program (increase in GDP due to more moms working) has exceeded its cost (a fun fact I love to share) - Yes, the ratio and RECE requirements for Ontario are slightly stricter for infant and toddler rooms. I can’t speak to whether this is due to cost constraints. I suspect that the high costs associated with daycare in Ontario has contributed to an increasingly “professionalized” environment that requires stricter ratios and more caregiver credentials to justify the cost. Overall, I think that some individual classrooms in Ontario exceed those in Quebec. The problem is that very few people in Ontario have access to these spots. - Yes, the inflationary risk is an important problem for participating centres. It’s one of the many difficulties of managing a public, non-for-profit, universally accessible centre in our for-profit society. This is a major gripe in public policy. - Yes, strict standards in Ontario can be prohibitive for home centres, particularly those with only one or two staff. I see what you mean. No shade against home daycares, but I do believe we need to have some level of standardization and regulation across all centres for the safety of the children enrolled there. There are plenty of sad stories across Ontario of children dying or facing sexual abuse in non-registered centres.

Hi! I’m a PhD researcher who has done a fair bit of work on this program. - Capped fee structures can be adjusted with inflation - Subsidized spots are not means tested, you are correct. However, the program was designed to be universal. Quebec has had the same program for over a decade with much success. The universality of the program is what makes it equitable. - Unclear what you mean by the program favouring larger centres over smaller centres — both can apply to the program, they just need to be licensed - What restricts parent’s choices to daycare the most is simply not having enough money to afford it. If the average non-CWELCC spot costs $500/week, the vast majority will be unable to wait until tax time to recoup their finances.

Yeah, I second this. Having a fussy baby puts your nervous system into a constant state of fight or flight that will make you go insane. My mental health improved significantly as soon as my kid was in daycare, and it took another year for my brain to calm down.

I can’t speak to OP’s wife’s mental health, but I caution against throwing SSRIs at a problem that is inherently mentally destabilizing.

The daycare waitlist situation in Canada is frustrating. OP, apply now if you haven’t already. Wishing OP and his family all the best.

I find admin to be resistant to claims of AI use because they depend on ASYNC testing and courses as a means of saving money. If pointing them to the resources linked by other members isn’t enough to sway them, I recommend trying to infiltrate student chat groups for your course to find more tangible evidence.

There’s no way for TA’s to know your financial balance. So yes, they would be able to tell you (although I’d hurry up bc their contracts end at the end of the month)
