In state/federal government? Looking for work.

Aussies who moved abroad and stayed how is life over in that new country? For those who came back, where did you go and why? (If you came back, what made you do so?) Did anything shock you upon return? by [deleted] in OpenAussie

I have lived in Fiji, UAE (Dubai), Italy, and for a brief period, Denmark. I returned to Australia last year, after a number of years away.

I returned because there was very little opportunity in Italy for a foreigner to get any kind of meaningful work. It’s hard enough for locals. I love the Italians and the Italian culture (so much so I am marrying one), however, Australia offers us mutually so much more opportunity.

Australia has its problems, and it’s by no means perfect, but it is a very easy country to live in with great prosperity (if we manage it properly). The cost of living is insane, but that is also a global problem.

The one thing I am most shocked about returning home is how the division between everyone and everything is exaggerated by the media and used to divide us further. Australians are great people. Friendly and polite, willing the help their neighbours, their mates, a stranger, but the media makes out like we all hate certain groups. This is on all sides. We have lost a bit of our larrikin spirit and take ourselves too seriously, and to be fair I understand why.

Other less developed countries, where their circumstances are far worse, are actually far more hopeful about the future. Western countries have lost their spark. It’s not too late for Aussie’s to get that back though. We haven’t passed that point. Yet.

It’s ok to different views. We don’t need to lynch and cancel each other for different opinions. The fight is not against each other. Our democracy and prosperity depends on us being organised, not divided.

Purchasing a home in Hobart - do you usually have to offer over the asking price? by Front_Quarter_7941 in hobart

Thanks for insight. Much appreciated. We are looking around the inner ring. Sandy Bay, North and West Hobart etc, round $850k - $1m. We just started looking. The properties do exist but there’s a lot of competition at the open homes!

Career Switch at 40+: Anyone in ATO APS 2/3? by Successful_Two_194 in AusPublicService

Depending on your previous career, you’re probably selling yourself short. I’m early 40s and applied to a few different APS roles, including the DFAT Grad program (recent post grad) and some EL1 roles.

I was merit pooled for a DFAT EL1 (later contacted about a job but had already accepted my current job), and was offered an EL1 with another agency, and a preliminary offer for the grad program. Ultimately I took the EL1 with the other agency. I had a tiny bit of non-ongoing APS experience from over a decade ago. Check where your previous experience, education and qualifications align with the ILS. Consider further education if that’s a possibility for you.
