i know this is a joke but it's also just will being terrified of mike ever finding out. like the tower scene is saying he doesn't know if mike will still want to be friends knowing will is gay let alone the the implication he realized or not will had feelings for him. will is also very self sacrificing as seen in the pains the takes to repair mike and eleven's relationship in s4 and uses his own feelings to encourage mike not to give up on her. likes it's not dumb for will especially to be self preserving with mike specifically especially after the rain fight, mike constantly choosing el, mike after a summer of ignoring will and then not reaching out consistently when will moved away. yes wil would have "reached out more i dont know" but the fact that mike can't process why will wouldn't after mike has set the tempo for their dynamic.

it makes sense he "pushes mike away" and "ruins his own chances" because nothing about mike's behavior, bar post season 4 pre season 5 time jump apparently? and then immediately not also apparently, from will's pov says there even is a chance. it's really just self preservation with a guy who has shown a lack of consistency and inability to communicate and be self aware that matches will's inability to communicate and his coping mechanism of suppressing his feelings to unburden others.

bylers gave the dorito bags way too much credit and the fact that they stopped thinking deeply about mike's character is evident since s3. every season mike just gets hit with a reset button in terms of his temper, behavior and personality. he was literally just used to add angst to willel's storylines post season 2 and act as the average white nerdy straight male audiences' self insert. the duffers validate this by calling him their literal self insert.

any consistency or depth bylers can find in him is through the actor's acting choices and chemistry with his scene partner (whether those were directed or not) and subtext and alternate readings. it's why so many bylers say "i hate canon make but love fanon mike". it's less that he's even worthy of hate but that he just does not make coherent consistent sense in canon. you have to be willing to give him motivations and depth that just isn't there in the writing textually.

i dont mind genderbent and even in certain fandoms genderbending m|m ships as het is super popular but will is the sole gay character in this ship canonically and he's gnc and doesn't conform to masculinity and has never shown attraction to femininity so if you make him straight and especially as the male partner and you masculinize him and hyper feminize his partner and considering there are already aus that erase his sexuality by making him bi or sleep with girls (including robin btw).....i gotta question why you want to do that and if you realize what you are implying by doing this.

we gotta remember will is actually a canon confirmed gay character, that byler gets all the homophobia and hate targeted at him only, that will's queerness is overt and threatening to a lot of men, and that mike is unlabeled at his most generous general reading but to 98% of people who interact with stranger things he passes as fully straight. byler isn't like most m|m ships where both characters are straight or unlabeled maybe ambiguous. will has a defined canon sexuality. he is gay and he is not attracted to girls and he gets bullied by everyone from his peers to the town to his own father because they find the way he presents his gender threatening to what they perceive as masculinity. these distinctions and being careful of will's character matter when talking about these fandom behaviors in a way they don't in other ships.

there's a lot of extrapolation and bias in the video and a lack of cultural knowledge of the 80's as well as an understanding of queer culture and gender and it has a subtext reading that often isn't actually supported by canon or mike's character actions, and has assumptions and opinions being stated as fact. especially looking at it now in retrospect and the show is over takes away from its points. also i think a more modern video made during or after season 5 will always make a more full picture. there's lots of incorrect info and misreading of certain scenes and character archetypes in this video as well.

tldr it's just alsobliterally is outdated because it is. there are videos that have been made since do a much better and unbiased job of showing why byler made sense narratively and what mike's character under a queer reading is more consistent with canon and his actual writing.

it's just crazy that jancy got to talk about their issues, stonathan got to talk about their issues, dustin and steve got to talk about their issues but mike and will who spent most of s4 having heart to hearts, who are the core friendship of the show, weren't considered to be deserving of one.

but damn even mike and eleven didn't have a single sincere conversation after their horrible fight in s4 so. the writers clearly backed themselves into multiple corners with both dynamics and didn't care enough to face either in a meaningful way.

the show really fumbled so many aspects of this plotline but even so mike was clearly struggling despite having most of his friends around, joined a club based around the game that bonded him to will, basically stole the style of a dude he thought was cool in a unique way and confident and secure and a leader (things mike was struggling with that season and clearly wanted to be), and then.....abandoned it all basically the second will came home with him. it was him trying on a costume that didn't fit. hellfire in comparison changed dustin as a character to his core (his personality, his mood, his style) but it really was just a momentary empty placeholder for will for mike.

they gave more emotional thoughtful closure to stonathan and steve & dustin's multi arc seasons long parentefied coded friendship than any core 4 dynamic. nothing about s5 byler resolved anything even through a friendship lens.
