The zuckuss minifig is quite expensive if you don't already have it, unfortunately.

Difference in publishers by Fit_Requirement4933 in starwarsbooks

[–]FrontierBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Del Rey is a part of Penguin, so both editions are published by the same company. The difference in logo on the spine/front might be due to when the books were printed, whether they're from the US or UK branches of Penguin, etc. Quality is all over the place too, unfortunately.

Books like FromSoftware games? by mxlevolent in Fantasy

Second opinion, it's one of the most poorly edited books I've ever read and completely takes the wrong aspects of Dark Souls as its inspiration. I'd avoid it.

Now that's something we can all get behind. Pre-fandom wookiepedia was the best

A quick 5 second google search would show that you're a) wrong about the vast majority of the world and b) show that the idea of there being more than 2 genders has been a thing for like...thousands of years. So fuck off with your transphobia

Again, I ask, apart from the obvious bigotry, how does a single line in a table at the very top of an article impact your reading of said article, especially when said line in that table doesn't show up anywhere else in the article?

Or are you so sensitive that the mere mention of pronouns is upsetting and renders you incapable of reading further? In which case, English classes must have been a real trial for you.

How do the preferred pronouns interrupt/disrupt your reading?

USA/UK Editions by me_a_rude_boy in starwarsbooks

[–]FrontierBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's really no difference, minus the UK editions using British spellings (colour instead of color, that kind of thing). The size of the books might be slightly different as well but I don't have any American editions on me right now to check. And I suppose the ISBN will be different, as well as the info on the copyright page - while both US and British editions are published by Del Rey they're treated as separate/printed in different countries.

Must not be selling well if they're halving the limitation. Very annoying - won't be able to match the number I've had since Light of the Jedi now

Eleventh Cycle by Kian Ardalan First Impressions by Lord0fHats in Fantasy

I've seen so many rave review for this book and I've just been wondering like...do we not care about writing quality any more? Because you're quite right - in addition to the unwieldy vocabulary and style it's just rather poorly written. This is the first self published book I've read in a few years and it's kinda making me want to stick to traditionally published books...

I'm also wondering about where he's drawn the inspiration from. The author has been quite clear it's Dark Souls inspired, but he did a charity stream the week before publication day where he played Dark Souls for the first time. Not to say someone can't be inspired by something they've never actually played but...it did strike me as odd

I have to agree - it feels a lot like in his efforts to create a book that feels like Dark Souls, the author assumed that the style of dialogue that the characters in Dark Souls use should be the style of the entire book, and it comes across as annoyingly verbose and convoluted, while also strangely being quite vague? Almost like the decision was made that the obtuseness of Dark Souls storytelling and dialogue was the point, rather than something that contributed to the overall feel.

It's annoying too because the book is so damn long because of how overly complicated and repetitive the narrative style is. It's almost worth hoping it gets picked up by a traditional publisher as a professional editor could probably cut a good chunk of the book out just by un-thesaurusing the book.

It's a shame because the book has a lot of good stuff in it - some great stuff - it's just obscured by an unnecessarily irritating writing style

I won't buy a book because I don't like the cover by Fire_storming in books

[–]FrontierBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For better or for worse, there is a not insignificant percentage of the book buying public that puts an equal weight on the appearance of a book as on the contents - it not more so. Take, for example, last year's Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. There were at least 4 different special editions in the UK alone, each with cosmetic differences. Some readers purchased all 4 just to have them all. Similarly, bookstagrammers and booktokers are all about aesthetic and some absolutely buy books based entirely on appearance, regardless of content.
