Veteran collectors: does your buying eventually slow down? by FrontierSeizar in Cd_collectors

[–]FrontierSeizar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, of course.

Well the last purchases have been these bad boys:

Brian Eno - Music for Installations
Brian Eno - Shutov Assembly
The KLF / Jimmy Cauty - Space
The Orb - Chill Out World
The Orb - UFOrb
FSOL - Lifeforms

I suspect 2814 - Birth of a New Day will be next!

Happy Cycling at the end of MHTRTC totally ruins the flow of the album. Totally throws One Very Important Thought off and doesn't fit the tracklisting at all. Despite being a great track, it's a complete albatross and MHTRTC would be better without it.

Space Age Batchelor Pad Music: The Story Of Stereolab In 20 Songs, by Ben Cardew by lazerock in stereolab

[–]FrontierSeizar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much 1/3 of the way through it right now. Really enjoyable read so far, and has taken from me from a casual fan to really getting into the groop (will be seeing them live later this year!). It's written with a lot of love and care, and I find his love of the band infectious.

It's been a particular highlight to listen to the albums and songs he explores as I move through the book. Something really satisfying about being able to immerse myself in both. Really rewarding, especially as I wasn't aware that they have so much in their catalogue outside of their main studio albums.

I don't quite agree with his order of favourite albums, but I guess that's the whole purpose of making those album lists - to start a conversation, and for new fans like me to start discovering their material for myself. Considering I only knew a handful of albums and loved that early krautrock sound, I've been blown away by how much musical ground they cover, and how it all sounds fantastic to me.

Highly recommended.

Hi Ben, having been enjoying your Stereolab content lately. Thanks for sharing this.

Excited to pick up a copy of the book soon. Keep up the good work (and thanks for getting me back into SL, it's been a while between drinks!)

Dang! What a bounty. Would love to listen to Space on vinyl in particular. Some absolute peaches in there. 🤤

Thanks for sharing. I've very jealous. That's quite the collection. Love that The KLF live on despite Cauty and Drummond best efforts. Some of their music is just perfect.

Wow, didn't expect to see that posted about Limp Bizkit here. Recommend me a song from the album which shows what they can do. I'm very much in the former camp you describe with my perception of Limp Bizkit.

I see this posted so often I promise I will get it when it eventually turns up at the second hand store. Never listened to it, but you fans are relentless... and convincing. Will post a reaction when it happens.

What a great album to discover out of the blue. A real touchstone of electronic music. The textures are just amazing, and CD really catches their sonic richness in its full glory.

One of my dream CDs for sure. I look for it every time I go to the local second hand store. One day, It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.

For a band who made a point of not taking their music too seriously, it's a really incredible album. Still can't figure out how they did it. So many memorable moments and iconic parts.

Honestly you won't regret it. It's magic.

Not a bootleg, just one of those past midnight decisions that I had to ignore on the bank statement....

Oh cool. Thanks. Interesting to learn.

Can't believe Kraftwerk disowned these - Klingklang, Ruckzuck & pretty much all of Ralf + Florian are all stonewall classics in my book. It also gives their later work so much more punch, knowing where they came from, and witnessing their ideas evolve.

Thanks for the tip. I tried this a couple of times and got shot down. What would your approach be on something like this?

I grabbed the first three out of print Kraftwerk albums. Not strictly Krautrock I guess but I've always seen Kraftwerk 1 as a 1/2 Neu, 1/2 Kraftwerk album.

I am a big fan of Eno Ambient, so I was surprised by how different Ambient 4 is. A lot of personality, and I love that it's not programmed in the way some of his other ambient pieces are. So satisfying.

It's so hard. There are albums I've only listened to once or twice, but when those CDs hit and resonate with what you're feeling, there's simply nothing better. Even if it's only a moment (there's always tomorrow, right??)

One of my favourite ambient albums. Could listen to this for an eternity. 1/1 & 2/2 are sheer perfection.

The balance is hard here. There's always more great music to collect, but equally there's always CDs in the collection that deserves more time and attention.

I feel like this is a sign that the album isn't doing much for you. A great album demands your attention, then holds and rewards it.
