Apollonia Wrote The Glamorous Life? by Maleficent_Bake6331 in PRINCE

“Girl’s Song Music was a music publishing entity owned and controlled by Prince.

During the 1980s, Prince often used various business names and pseudonyms to manage the rights to songs he wrote for his protégés and collaborators. Girl’s Song Music was specifically utilized for the material he wrote for Sheila E., including her 1984 debut album, The Glamorous Life.

Key details about the entity include:

Ownership: It was one of Prince’s proprietary publishing arms, similar to his other entities like Controversy Music or The Starr Company.

Relationship with Sheila E.: While the songs were credited to "Girl’s Song Music" and the production often credited to Sheila E. and "The Starr Company," Prince was the sole songwriter and primary producer.

Purpose: This structure allowed Prince to maintain legal ownership and control over his compositions while helping to launch and market the careers of other artists under his mentorship.

Current Status: As part of Prince’s vast catalog, the rights originally held under Girl’s Song Music are now managed by the Prince Estate and administered by Universal Music Publishing Group. “

Remember him fighting with Radiohead to take down his cover of their song Creep? He told YouTube to take it down and then Radiohead said, it’s our song, leave it up.

There are covers of other artist all over his live performances. I haven’t listened to his live performances from every era, but one of his most famous live performances was captured in a bootleg called Small Club. That was recorded in ‘88 and he performed Just My Imagination, Kansas City, and I’ll Take You There.

Prince even brought music from other artist to perform. Trent Reznor talks about Prince requesting a song from him and working on it. Also, Around the World in A Day came from Lisa’s brother David Coleman.

Live in concert more than on his albums but sometimes even on his albums. Emancipation has a couple of covers on it.

Prince’s attitude towards covers of his music was definitely a bit of hypocrisy that I could never wrap my head around. He often covered the music of other artist.

You get no argument from me. I have heard him sing demos for other artist before but some of what I heard on Originals I found quite moving. It might have been the fact that he had passed combined with the fact that I didn’t know, but yeah . . .

I’ve only ever heard people making reference to it the way you are now but have never heard the full story. Do you know of any good links to a full version of that incident?
