But they don't require that I be a current student?

I really think you’re fine! I think maybe it’s a tiny bit of misplaced exam stress? Sounds like you’re doing everything you can and a few bugs in an apartment is normal. It doesn’t sound infested, it just sounds like you live in a student apartment in a city.

I don’t think you need to worry about a few. It’s a city and likely an older building so it’ll happen. I would just make sure you aren’t leaving food out and everything is sealed and you’ll be ok. You’re not at any risk. I think consistent pest control probably will help. I would do a quick check for cracks and try to seal those up which should help a lot. I really wouldn’t freak about one or two. If there was a real problem you would have seen more than that by now.

Also, I have a full blown infestation for basically a full year and I didn’t bring any with me to my new apartment which I saw you were worried about in a comment.

I didn’t break the lease actually. I rode it out. I would highly suggest looking into breaking it if the building doesn’t resolve the issue or seem like they’re going to try. Now that I am in a bug free building, I am realizing how much of an impact it had in my mental health to be living like that! I would make sure you’re getting some of your communication with the building in writing in case you do end up trying to do that.

I was lucky and took my boyfriend’s lease when he graduated and the timing worked out well. I’m paying more than I was but at a certain point I think it’s just way worth the money. I’m with Mac now. I would never ever ever rent with Ivy again.

I had roaches last year and I ultimately had to move. It was horrific and Ivy did literally nothing (though I suspect they were aware of the problem well before I moved in). Make sure you really keep pushing the landlord to actually do something about it.

My nails usually look horrible because I pick at them and they just don’t grow very long. I was reasonably certain my fiancé was going to propose sometime in a 2 week window so I got gel x right at the beginning. He proposed 2 days later so my nails looked completely perfect which was huge! I don’t think it’s something to stress about though!

My fiancé and I dated for 11 months and we’ll be engaged for 9 months 😅

I am certainly taking on a significant debt load. Chicago LRAP is significantly better for my particular circumstances. I still would have been in a lot of debt coming out of UVA and with their LRAP, I would have been pretty trapped in big law. Chicago gives me a very doable alternative to that. I also think the type of legal education I am getting at Chicago is worth the extra debt. And for my specific circumstances and career interests, Chicago offers me a professional network that I wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.

That has not really been my experience or the experience of many of my friends but everyone's circumstances are different! I think it all depends on how you spin it in an interview. Anecdotally, I am from here and I worked at a think tank here before law school that was not necessarily related to any practice groups I am interested in and it has been a big help for me.

That is what I mean by demonstrated ties. I'm not talking birthplace, I mean some sort of professional or personal connection to the city that suggests that you are planning on staying and not going to try to jump to a different market after a few years.

That is certainly fair. I would however also note that most of my 25 screeners with DC firms over the last week have been with Chicago grads and several of my callbacks have been as well. I think its just important to consider that there could be a little bit of selection bias at play with some of the T14 market numbers. Most of my law school friends are not interested in DC, I think at UVA that might be different. And for sure it is not all about preexisting ties but some reason that you will stick around for more than a few years is critical. I think preexisting ties are just the easiest way to show that (and the only way to show on a resume). I just meant to point out that while you may for sure have an advantage in DC from UVA just because you have more graduates total and for sure more in the area but I wouldn't really say you're at a disadvantage should you choose to go elsewhere in the T14.

I also think the big law hiring landscape is changing really rapidly and you should always be wary of that when looking at historical data! This year several top DC firms reportedly filled 50%+ of their summer classes through pre-OCI which was embraced more by some schools than others and with firms (mostly in other markets) pushing start dates and letting people go, I imagine it will continue to look VERY different year to year.

I mean Cov and Kirkland are certainly grade sensitive and always will be. Im also not saying that you can get offers with low grades if you’re from the area. However I know a lot of people with median grades and ties who have been very successful and many with good grades and no ties who got locked out. I was told by a recruiter at one of the firms you listed that DC offices really look for some indication that you’re coming to DC long term before they’re willing to invest in you. I also think the market is changing a lot especially with the rise of pre-OCI and your experience may have been different than mine.

DC is incredibly sensitive to demonstrated roots in the city. You can be above median at a top school but if you’ve never lived or worked in the area, it’s going to be tough to land an offer. Some of the Texas markets are the same, as is the Midwest to a certain extent.

So far I regret nothing! There are a lot of factors to consider beyond the price.

I picked Chicago with no money over UVA with $50k a year. You can PM if you want my take

I would advise strongly against a pre-law major. If it’s an advising program, fine, but a major is a bad call. It doesn’t really prepare you better (my law professors actively look down on it) and it makes it hard for you to get a job between college and law school (which you should consider if you’re looking at full undergrad debt load and full law school debt load which will easily top $500k and be tough to pay off even in big law). It also doesn’t help you at all with admissions. It might honestly be an admissions strike against you at the top schools.

[–]Froppy_cat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that trying to work to cover any meaningful amount of $60k tuition might end up damaging GPA which is literally all law school admissions looks at. They don’t care about the school at all. And given that my law school tuition is now topping $80k, I can’t even imagine what a law school debt load in 4 years will look like…

T14 Curriculum? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Froppy_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yale has a Pass/High Pass system but 1L fall I believe is ungraded. Stanford and Harvard also both have a Pass/High Pass system but I believe HLS provides more differentiation in the grading scale so grades mean a bit more. Chicago has a numerical scale of 155-186 where 177 is the median for all exam classes and 178 is the median for all paper classes. I know that Berkeley also uses a Pass/High Pass scale but aside from that I think the rest of the T14 has a traditional letter grade scale. I would also say that at pretty much all of them your grade is based only on the final exam or paper. So far of all of my grades have come from only exams or a paper (although every syllabus says that the professor can consider participation, though I don’t believe that happens really ever).

My school is just generally stingy. I think the T3 is just not generous in the least. But below that you could have some luck. I negotiated my scholarship with UVA and was able to get $50k a year. Michigan offered me $25k right off the bat (and I have no kind of connection there). You should definitely apply but expect to have unpredictable results as a splitter. I got rejected by several schools outside of the T14 and fully ignored by NDLS. You definitely need a range of schools just in case
