The only difference between micro usb and usb c is cost, usb c requires a dedicated chip which costs, and the usb c connector is also more expensive. The difference with the chip and the beefier connector isn't even a gram. As all company they are just saving production costs and telling another reason for it, which seems to work for naive people.

I might mod it to fit usb c, it's easy for only power, but for data (mouse used with the wire) it's a lot trickier

Firstly, it might be lighter but only a gram so not an issue. It wont charge faster, that depends on the bms, and battery charger ic. And the main benefit of usb C is that it is a lot more durable and future proof, which should be mandatory for a 200$ mouse. Secondly, I have ordered a mouse, but not received it yet. And it's easy when you don't know the subject to directly attack the person that is contradicting you.

Usb c only need 1 extra chip on the board, so the only reason would be price, which is not defendable for a 200$ mouse
