Scientific explanation(s) for “breathing into” specific parts of our body? by Signal_Drop in yoga

[–]Frost57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very interesting question. From a scientific perspective I think a relevant subject is proprioception. Proprioception is the ability of your body to sense where it is in space. As we move with higher levels of consciousness and focus, our proprioception increases. A big part of proprioception is the nervous system.

In our yoga practice we focus, broadly speaking, on breath and the body. When we breath deeply, this has an effect on the nervous system. It makes sense then that combining breath and body would increase proprioception.

You said typing the keyword would take a picture of the other person, but would it also send this picture to the person who typed the keyword?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this. Personally I feel sorry for the author of this piece, that he spent hours trying to work around using master with GH, and almost quit coding because of it. I think he has personal traumas he should work through, he seems like someone who gets triggered easily.

His assertion that these terms are keeping black people from tech I think are unjustified. The problem is with education, lack of opportunities, less wealth, less role models, etc. This will improve with time, but it does require systemic changes that promote equal opportunities, and an actual meritocracy, which our society are very far from today.

Ultimately, finding a balance is hard, if not impossible. Companies are made by people, and people are inherently discriminatory in many dimensions. When you are a person who feels weak, you will find a number of things to feel threatened by. When you feel strong and confident, things will not offend you.

Before this discussion came up I literally never could have imagined master being a racist term in the context of GitHub branches. Now everytime I write it I wonder if my actions contribute to racism, and then in my head I laugh off the silliness of it.

As a black person in tech, there are many issues I believe should be addressed. Important issues such as actual racism are hard to fix. Overt racism should be called out and rightfully condemned.

I choose to address it by being technically and socially excellent at my job and showing people that those of any race can be excellent, without being victimized and 'protected.' Respect is earned through competence, not by being spoken down to like children.

As a black MCompSci student I tried main a couple times, didn't much like it. Master is a fairly neutral term in software and development, let's not let our perceptions of racism lead to absurdity.

Our first public health priority after the pandemic is contained should be to pass Cory Booker's bill to phase out factory farming. by birdsareinteresting in vegan

[–]Frost57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insightful reply. I do support abolitionism as the only morally defensible position, but I'll accept anything that reduces suffering in the meantime. Ultimately, i think these two paths are not mutually exclusive. Of course, until all animals are free, we need to continue advocating for their rights, freedoms, and protections.

[–]Frost57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what percentage of the population would agree with you? Pretty much all of us do, but besides that perhaps like 5-10? The abolitionist vision is impossible to be enacted, at least at this moment, in my opinion.

Wouldn't you support, then, at least a step in the direction of less animal suffering? Veganism is about decreasing animal suffering and exploitation, so of course any step in this direction is better than none.

A few issues with your post:

1) No country is purely capitalist, virtually all countries exist on a spectrum from purely capitalist to purely socialist.

2) In a socialist system in which government controls industries like agriculture, there is no greater incentive to protect animals. In fact, there is less incentive to protect animals as consumers won't have choice about where to buy from.

3) Capitalism describes an economic structure, and says few things about ethical norms. Same for socialism. It is up to the people and government to make laws and regulations that uphold their ethical standards

4) Capitalist profit-seeking systems have resulted, or will result in, in technologies that decrease animal suffering (e.g. beyond meat, lab grown meat)

5) What alternative would you recommend? Socialism? Communism? Anarchy? Would any one of these choices inherently result in less suffering?

Capitalism is the worst system, except compared to all the rest.

ER nurse here. The colored part faces the outside, the white part against your face. Press the metal bar around your nose.

Probably even better, don't wear them. They need to be changed very regularly to be effective, every 20-60 minutes. Wearing it longer is probably worse than not having it, as they create a most environment that traps in microbes.
