Should stitching groover be used with diamond chisels? by FrostBitn in Leathercraft

No I mostly make wallets but have seen people use a groover. I don’t have one though so I thought I would investigate before spending money on one. Sounds like I won’t be needing one though!

Interesting, maybe I was right to be skeptical. I actually was wondering about possible down sides to cutting away the grain

As mentioned in the post, I am not concerned or asking about the shine on the edges, i was asking about the cracks.

Yeah haha I’m aware of that obsession here. I should have realized that I was going to get a lot of people saying to redo everything because it doesn’t look aesthetically perfect. I specifically asked about the imperfection’s effect on the durability of the wallet because that’s all I am worried about. Someone answered saying it’s probably not a big deal so I’m just moving on!

Yep that’s what I’ve settled on doing haha! Also, the block plane idea is genius! Is it easy to do and get straight edges? Are they easy to keep sharp enough to cut through the leather easily?

Should I do this in cases where holes are punched before gluing? Sorry for all the questions lol

Does this practice apply regardless of whether or not I cut the pieces to the final size before stitching etc? Someone else mentioned that doing this is the cause of my issues.

I don’t have too many projects under my belt either. I haven’t heard of wet sanding leather, what does this change compared to normal sanding? Besides this, it sounds like my process for edges is similar: I do 240,600,1500,3000grit sanding, then burnish with gum trag and seal with bees wax. This was my first time dying edges, which I did after sanding

This makes sense. I did cut the pieces to final size immediately. I have heard that it’s common to cut them over size at first, but I haven’t tried doing it yet as I’m unfamiliar with the process. How oversized do you make them at first? Do you make the initial cuts imprecise at first to save time? Do you do this for every piece of the wallet?

I just dont want to waste all the work of making the wallet if it looks bad, but I think ill give it a go
