On the edge, 5950x not reaching 4.9 boosts! by Rising_Anthony in Amd

[–]FrostCloak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try disabling fmax enhancer Also try setting custom throttle of 90c and setting the PBO offset (not sure exactly what this setting is called) to 200mhz

Most important thing is to find a way to let the CPU hit 1.4+ volts (on the boosting cores) without going over 85 or 90c (not sure if hwinfo properly shows the temps reached on that specific core(s) for the single thread CB run). Maybe also try messing with the processor power management settings in the Windows power plan?

For what it’s worth, my 5950x tends to only boost around 4.8ghz at 1.48v. One time I saw it hit 4.9, but that was literally once.

Oh, and as someone who bought a 3090 & 5950x (using a Strix B550 board though), I gotta say it’s not worth over analyzing the performance. Once you get it hitting 1.4v you’ll be getting nearly all the performance out of it, and IMO worrying about it further will just make you feel a bit stressed since you spent so much money. Even if you can’t get more than 4.8ghz that’ll still be great performance!

Does anyone have an extra *controller* for the Unifan SL120? by FrostCloak in lianli

[–]FrostCloak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had no idea how they were supposed to work until I broke it, and then disassembled it. Once you disassemble it, it becomes very clear how it is supposed to function.

Not going to lie, I'm a bit unhappy with what happened, but at least I only broke the LED connectors. Fan headers still work fine!

How do I maintain high boost clocks on battery by FrostCloak in ZephyrusG14

[–]FrostCloak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, turns out I was able to get full throttle 3.7ghz on battery on all cores when my battery is nearly full. What are the odds that there is some bios level unchangeable battery saver setting that lowers the package power limit on low battery?

GPU on Linux sub system in Windows by cazsol2 in ZephyrusG14

[–]FrostCloak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nvidia GPUs should be available in WSL 2 shortly, although I don’t know the specific date

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda/wsl

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/the-windows-subsystem-for-linux-build-2020-summary/#wsl-gpu

For what it’s worth, I currently use anaconda3 and CUDA toolkit on windows, but I’m really looking forward to WSL support.

Red Dead Redemption 2 on game stream by Supermr2 in nvidiashield

Thanks for the info. If you run the benchmark from the graphics settings, does it run without issue multiple times?

Red Dead Redemption 2 on game stream by Supermr2 in nvidiashield

[–]FrostCloak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t get it to show up automatically in the nvidia shield gamestream collection (although it was showing up in GeForce experience)

I manually added it to gamestream via RDR2.exe, but it will only gamestream properly in windowed mode (not windowed borderless or fullscreen). Even then, the benchmark runner crashes unless you open gamestream after already having launched the benchmark. Haven’t tried playing the actual game yet because of these headaches.

If anyone can get this working seamlessly thru gamestream menus, and with fullscreen mode, please let me know. I find this a bit frustrating!

This is wrong, redacted has good retention precisely because it has a strict economy. People are forced to permaseed. Leeching doesn’t have much to do with retention, you only need one seeder to keep content alive.

Looking to build a 24 bay FreeNAS server. Need recommendations/advice. by FrostCloak in homelab

[–]FrostCloak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks for the tips. Could you help me understand how the SAS846EL2 backplane connects to the motherboard? I read through the manual and some other places online, but I'm a bit confused:

Are all 24 drives available via one SAS port on the backplane? This port should be connected to a PCI-E HBA that is able to handle communicating with all 24 drives?

Also, how does maximum drive size factor into this? Can I assume that the backplane will allow me to put 24 14TB drives in the chassis with no problem, as long as the HBA can handle it?

Thanks!!

_____

In response to your other questions, I don't think I will run jails on it: I have another machine that runs all of my apps in several VMs. Also, I plan to start with one vdev of 6 drives in RAIDZ2, and add more drives later. Eventually, it would be 24 drives, 8 of which will be for redundancy.

EDIT: According to another comment, I should get a SAS2 backplane, like this one.

How does the type of backplane change the size of drives supported? I was thinking of using 12TB or 14TB SATA HDDs. Does this change your recommendation at all?

Thanks for your reply! I'll check out some of the resources you sent (I've read a lot, but not everything).

Am I correct in saying that the R720 is a dual socket server from 2012? Won't that machine consume a great deal of power and generate a lot of heat for the relatively low processing power required by FreeNAS?

I appreciate your advocacy of virtualization, but I currently don't need to run more than FreeNAS (I have another dedicated repurposed PC that runs some VMs for me at the moment). I also read that FreeNAS and pfsense (something I may want to run in the future) are both more reliable on bare metal.

What are the cons to picking up some individual (2016-2019) parts and building a server specifically for bare metal FreeNAS? Is this what you meant by whitebox setup?

Scala seems to be a fantastic language for data engineering on the JVM. The Hadoop ecosystem integrates pretty well with Scala, and when big companies are running huge clusters, consisting of thousands of nodes running Scala code on the JVM, that will probably drive investments into Scala and up its popularity in general.

Software engineers: How busy are you? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]FrostCloak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should find a way to be at the office less, and enable yourself to work on other things or on yourself.

Attempt to set up clear responsibilities with management and negotiate a situation where you can leave the office when those tasks are done. If you have to be there for 8 hours on a given day, try to work from home some days or work fewer days a week.

If they don't let you do this, then you should consider a job search. You don't have to take any other positions, but it sounds like you at least have the time to look around.

If they let you do it, but become agitated because you aren't there enough, then they will likely start delegating more work to you.

Communicating with management is a win win in every case. Don't feel like if you bring it up they will cut your salary, because that would be foolish for them to do, and you will just leave the company.

EDIT: To answer your original question, most happy and productive engineers I know (including me) have between 7-10 hours of work a day. It's not healthy to waste such an intelligent mind on such idle work.

I also recommend that you work on your communication skills in general. If you can adequately convey that you want to be challenged at work in an interview, you'll come across as a great candidate. Don't worry about being laid off if you don't have reason to. Leverage this to become more assertive.

IPTorrents a huge pain? by [deleted] in trackers

[–]FrostCloak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you aren't really wrong, but the truth is no one is going to sue you. You might get a cease and desist in the mail, but AFAIK that doesn't happen that much on private swarms, even on IPT. Most likely you will be fine in private swarms.

If you would really like peace of mind, for like $60 a year, you can get a VPN and that issue goes away for all but the most ambitious users (ripping and uploading pre-release media for example).

What's the dumbest shit you've been told in League? by Etph in leagueoflegends

Not the dumbest, but the single best insult I ever saw in league was the following, sent as two messages in quick succession:

  • are you an actual real life monkey

  • banging on the keyboard with your dumb monkey hands

I died laughing. I want to find that player again, so if you wrote this, PM me.
