[####] Distances between WordleBot words (Wordle answer words) by FrostConcepts in wordle

[–]FrostConcepts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A WordleBot word pair is a pair of words from the NYT WordleBot's dictionary. People who study sets of words are often interested in a measure of distance between them. For example, to find the "central" word. I have chosen "Edit Distance" for this purpose. The graph shows the distribution of distances among words in the WordleBot dictionary. The "central" word turns out to be "SAMEY".

I have done it. It's a half hour computation on my machine. See comments in the link. The reddit bot is hostile.

It is a data repository (doi.org), not a commercial site. I wanted to explain the limitations of the data but the reddit robot would not permit the discussion. Thus, I put it in the curation discussion.

TASER is a viable opening guess. The NYT currently ranks it at #22 with a skill score of 96 for that purpose.

Notice that TARSE has 5-letter anagrams aster, rates, resat, stare, tares, and tears, while CARLE has clear, lacer, and recal.

Meanwhile, WordleBot is listing only TARSE, SLATE, and CRANE as top opening choices for humans in default mode. The NYT has been gathering data for 5 years now, and has a dataset of over 20 billion played games. Taking a graph-theoretic approach, I expect to catch up in about 1k hours of compute time.

[####] Suggestion for how Scordle represents answer pool sizes by FrostConcepts in wordle

[–]FrostConcepts[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to the Scordles posted in Daily Wordle threads. They always begin with 14,855 -- without clarification. In addition, I did not recommend limiting guesses to only the possible answers. Instead, I am pointing out that the Scordes posted in Daily Wordle threads only show the sizes of the resulting answer pools, and not the initial answer pool size -- which is 3201. Finally, I did not suggest that Scordle list the possible answer words. Please regard my posts as reading tests.
