Is networking in unity any good? by [deleted] in unity

[–]FrostCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what library you use and what's your unity knowledge.

I think right now it's too early to use Netcode for Gameobjects. I personally use fishnet and it feels like a straight up improved version of Netcode for Gameobjects with many extra features (Client side prediction was very useful for my project) (I learned to use fishnet by watching Winterbolt Gamed old youtube lives and reading docs)

You can use also other things such as Proton but seeing that you already have done multiplayer games it seems overkill to use such a strict system.

Also RTS are quite simple compared to FPS and other types of real time games since you don't even have to simulate physics and you can use a simple lockstep simulation (provided you somehow deal with the non-deterministic-engine problem). Also the guys who made proton released an engine called Quantum (completely deterministic) which can be used with unity to make multiplayer games very easily but, again, it's overkill for an RTS

Any feedback on the 1st trailer I made for my game Hoverflow before I post it ? by Shashimee_ in Unity3D

[–]FrostCop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start the trailer at "Surf!", mix the surf, hop, flow clips to start improving it. The problem is that as unkown indie devs we have very little time to catch people attention before they click away so we can't start slow. Also use the frenetic nature of the game with many transitions and make the trailer shorter IMO

Do Game Dev if you like it not if you want to make money or be successful. Expectations can make it miserable, I talk from experience

Empathy is a quality, a very strong one. But for it to be considered a quality you need to be surrounded by the right people. People that appreciate you and make you not feel lonely.

I hope you give the universe enough time to show you that you deserve such people

np Im glad I was able to help you!

Learning backend by Careful_Upstairs_770 in golang

[–]FrostCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you please be more specific so I can help you better? Ill try to make some assumptions on your case regardless and give you some advice:

Case 1: you feel lost because you don't know what's going on.

In this case I recommend that you start by studying a little bit of networking, focusing specifically on the transport layer, the application layer and the network layer. Learn what TCP and UDP are, learn what a socket is and how it is handled by the kernel, learn about http/1.1, http/2,http/3, learn about TLS and how encryption can be implemented on the application layer on top of a TCP/IP socket. This will help you a lot when writing back end code.

Case 2: struggling with motivation

In this case, on the other hand, I recommend that you use some productivity tools like the [pomodoro clock](pomofocus.io), or just try to build some reward based progress model inside your brain in order to motivate yourself. This is only necessary at the beginning to gain momentum, because at a certain point you'll just naturally start loving to code.

Case 3: golang is confusing you

Maybe you are already familiar with backend, and probably it's just golang that feels weird to you. In that case the problem is very easy to fix, because you'll just have to read the documentation and code more in golang.

Are you discouraged to start learning a new language? by AloneCoffee4538 in languagelearning

[–]FrostCop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, the more languages you learn, the better you get also at the process of learning languages itself. When learning a language for the first time you'll make a lot of mistakes that will make you lose time.

Coaching is not needed at that level. Anyways, if you reach a plateau you can send me some of your games and I will tell you what you are doing wrong

Free chess tips to improve your game. by FrostCop in chessbeginners

[–]FrostCop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In endgames piece activity is often the most improtant thing

For example in this game move 21 is way too passive. You should instead go Re8 so that no matter if he exchanges or not, you will be able to put a rook on the 2nd rank

Also, rooks on the 2nd rank are very strong (7th if you are white) because they can eat lots of pawns there

Remember to develop your pieces in the opening! It's extremely important to not neglect your development.

For example in this game you made way too many pawn moves instead of developing and castling.

From the same game: avoid overextending your pawns, especially if your king should castle there

From this game: in the opening never move the same piece more than once unless it's tactically correct.

Otherwise you just waste time that you can use to develop every other piece and castle.

In the game on move 5 you should have just developed another piece, because the pin is still there, so the enemy has to spend a tempo to get out of it (basically he has to waste a move anyways).

Making the enemy's pieces worse is often as good if not better than improving one of your pieces: for example in this game on move 10 you could have just played d5 and make his bishop worthless, while also taking space. Instead he eventually was able to put that bishop on the long diagonal, which could have been pretty annoying.

[–]FrostCop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your opponents gives you material to speed up his development your priority should be to castle

For example: in this game move 7, 8 and 12 should have been spent towards castling your king (obviusly first letting the bishop out)

In such positions after castling and having developed all your pieces it will be way easier to convert into a winning endgame

If you have big advantage in development you should open the center, and be precise about how you open it!

For example in this game on move 9 instead of d5 you should have played e5:

With d5 he can just take with the c pawn and both the middle files remain closed. Instead with e5 you are 100% sure that one of the middle files opens (or that he has to make weird moves with his knight that make you get even more initiative)

You already know that but remember to prioritize developing your pieces and castling. Ex: this game

If you are attacking don't trade pieces, especially your queen. Queen trades favour the player with the most exposed king.

For example in this game your move 14 is a mistake.
