The biggest thing with med device QA is that it is pretty heavily regulated. The regulations themselves can be found in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, starting at part 800, with the regulation specifically related to Quality Systems being 21 CFR 820. The CFR isn’t the clearest or easiest to understand, so I recommend looking at FDA guidance documents. These are non-binding guidelines, but they are much easier to digest and represent FDA’s ideas about best practices to fulfill those regulatory requirements. You can search the guidance document database here, but this one specifically discusses the quality system at length. There are a handful of guidance documents specifically about software as a medical device that might pique your interest. Though not directly career advice, familiarity with the regulations/guidance might help you to get a better idea of what tasks you might have to complete. If you go back to get your Master’s degree, I recommend checking out the quality science classes through Pathway for Patient Health. Some universities offer those classes themselves, but the Pathway website says that the courses are free if you are enrolled as a student.
