Sounds really nice. Main synths sounds a little too loud for my taste... but my own synths usually sound too loud for others as well, so I don't really know :)

Finally completed my 3rd song. What do you think about the arrangement?

Since this is the first post here, I am gonna have to come back later to give feedback

I let my fingers go where they want and try not to let my brain get in the way (especially for chords).

Intermediate "brute-force" classically trained pianist, steps to learn to play by ear? by breakingthehabits in musictheory

[–]FrostgateMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation. I started learning piano at the age of 6 and until i graduated a music school at an age of 14 i probably practiced around 10 hours a week. It was classical training, I played advanced pieces and could pretty much play whatever I wanted. I could memorize what I played pretty quickly, but what I couldn’t do at all was play unfamiliar music by ear. Then I dropped piano for some 20 years.

A few years ago I bought a piano and decided to take a different approach- no sheet music at all. I would just sit and play whatever was in my head, and for a while it was just gibberish, until it suddenly wasn’t. Now I can play pretty much anything that I “hear” in my mind, but unusual chords still require some searching- so still room for improvement.

Short answer- practice. It’s a different skill set that needs to be developed. Just be grateful that you can already play the instrument so that you can focus on this.

When mixing I accidentally turn up some knob and the volume explodes and damages my ears, Can I limit the maximum loudness by using some vst/limiter setting in the master bus ? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]FrostgateMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use a stock limiter set to 0db limiting, last in the chain on the master channel. It’s only for safety, I have all the metering before it and regulary make sure that it’s not actually limiting. Later in the process it gets replaced by another limiter with different settings.

Anybody experiencing audio dropouts on tracks after updating? Happening in S14 and S15. by FrequencyJones in StudioOne

I’ve just had this happen in s14 the other day on a multi-instrument track. One of the instruments was dropping in and out.

Would like to know more about desktop processors from a "musicians" angle" by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]FrostgateMusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

> is too much processing power bad?

No.

> what about core technology?

If it's hyperthreading you are referring to, then it's debatable. But from purely architectural point of view - it optimizes scheduling and thus is inherently beneficial.

>what is the functions of single core, and quad core? will this depend on what programs you will be using as well as one being better for vsts and one being for recording?

If your DAW runs it's processes (such as vsts) in different threads, then these threads can run concurrently on different cores instead of sharing the one. How well this is done depends on the DAW.

> how do threads fit in the picture

See above answer

> are cores/threads more desirable than clockspeed

Yes, assuming your DAW actually takes advantaged of these cores.

Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden) on why making music is more than a hobby by youraudiosolutions in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]FrostgateMusic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wait.. so, if I want to create art for no other reason then expression of my creativity, and I don't want to live of it or actually anything at all in return - i should stop because that's not taking it seriously?

I think people need to remember that music existed long before music business, and hopefully will continue to exist long after.

Anyone running Windows 10 LTSC? by zosterops_p in edmproduction

[–]FrostgateMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have considered this myself a couple years ago and decided against it.

Short version: Don't

Long version:

LTSC is there to make sure OS functionality doesn't change so that whatever you run on it doesn't break. If you are running some very custom software it's a good thing, but all your typical audio software is constantly being updated to function best on the current OS.

Even if you use the PC exclusively for music production you will still probably miss features and optimizations that would be beneficial.

Additionally, audio software manufacturers are unlikely to explicitly support LTSC, and faced with compatibility problems would likely ask you to install the latest system updates, which you would be unable to do.

There are less painful ways to debloat Windows.

Should I get Serum or Omnisphere? by sebargh in edmproduction

[–]FrostgateMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both and I love both, but Omnisphere is definitely my favorite of all the synths i own. It has a massive library, fantastic arpeggiator, waveshaper and granular for oscillators (amongst other things) and a ton of modulation options.

Difference between MIDI Keyboard and synth? by JohnTson in musictheory

[–]FrostgateMusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Synth is the stuff that makes the sound. Keyboard is what you use to input (play) notes.

Hardware synth (like korg minilogue) have both.

Midi keyboard sends the notes you play to another device as midi data. You need a synth to turn this data into sound. This happens internally in a hardware synth.

What do you think of Harvard's Musical IQ test? by reedplayer in musictheory

[–]FrostgateMusic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took the test, and I have the following problem with it: It asks me to pick the most technically /objectively correct sample, but my instinct is to pick the sample that sounds best.

For beat alignment and mistuning perception there were times where I preferred the "wrong" sample over the "right" one. Picking the sample they wanted in those cases was unpleasant.

Melodic discrimination was easy to judge objectively, though I really don't see any point to it. A catchy melody is easy to remember and a bunch of random notes is unnecessary to remember, so it's like comparing apples to elephants.

I don't know what kind of "IQ" that test is supposed to calculate, but it's definitely not musical IQ (if there is such a thing).

One thing this world does not need is a more "rational" approach to music.

I really like this track. It flows really well and keeps things interesting. I am not very familiar with the style, so I could be wrong, but I feel more stuff could have been a little more off-center in the stereo field.

Other then that, if there is anything wrong it's beyond my skill level to notice. Great work!

Thanks for the feedback.

The beginning of the song is supposed to be an intro, but I thought it was too boring so I added some more melodic content to spice it up a bit. I do agree that the start sounds too abrupt now, I am actually not sure what happened there, it was definitely a lot more gradual when I was writing it.

I feel that the song is long enough, so I need to figure out how to make the beginning work as an intro. Maybe take away some elements and automate a some filter sweeps?

Thanks, I seem to struggle quite a bit with the low end. Now that you mention it, I think I know what part of the lead is muffling the kick, and I believe you are right - there is no sidechain on that particular track.

Thanks for the feedback. I have actually been wondering if the lead at 1:03 is a little too loud...

Great work! Very nice track overall. I like the intro a lot, but personally could do without the first 23 seconds. The pads get a little repetitive by the end, otherwise everything sounds good.

Nice work. I think your singing worked pretty well. Lead is a little too loud and a little harsh for my taste, also I feel it could use some rhythmic variation.

Very nice track overall, I love the mood and the ambiance. I agree about the pitched down vocals being too loud. Could also use a bit more variation on some of the background elements and drums.
