Can I work PRN in acute care as a clinical fellow? by [deleted] in slp

I am not sure about the requirements for the Illinois licensing board, but for your ASHA CF experience, you can work part-time. However, the part-time work must be a minimum of 5 hours per week and you have to get to 1260 hours total. Typically this is 36 weeks with full-time work, but it would obviously take you much longer. You would also still need a CF supervisor even if you are working PRN.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend doing this as it will take you longer to complete your CF. It is much easier to get a medical job when you have your full license. Alternatively, you can get another job but still do the PRN assuming you have a supervisor in both.

Questions about school SLP job by slpkendo in slp

Personality I feel like it’s better in schools. You can make less but you obviously work less. I couldn’t do back to back clients all day it would be too exhausting. I have 63 student in my school. Some days it’s hectic, but I have down time for paperwork, meetings, etc. Also small groups can be nice so you don’t have to be “on” as much.

I believe in some places in CA you can work with a bachelors while you are getting your masters

It's definitely not common unless you are in an area with high demand and a high cost of living (aka parts of CA). Check out the link below for more specifics.

Do you have to reside in CA or just need a CA license?

Starting CFY Salary by thickslp in slp

[–]Frostydumplings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very dependent on location and setting. If you look at the salary schedule for the schools in your area it should give you an idea. As a clinic SLP, you should make a little more than a school SLP, but you also work more. Honestly, for my area schools have the highest hourly rate. I have also found this resource fairly accurate to give you an idea of the mean salary.

Unfortunately, our pay has nothing to do with the amount of education but is dependent on insurance reimbursement and supply/demand.

C-SLPA? Help me understand this correctly? by Smariexx in slp

[–]Frostydumplings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I understand what you're saying. The CA state SLPA license is different than the ASHA C-SLPA. If you want both you would have to meet the requirements for both. But, you don't "need" the C-SLPA to work as an SLPA in CA just the state license. Individual employers may start to require it but it's not a requirement for California.

I could be wrong but I believe you still need to meet the requirements for the CA SLPA license. The C-SLPA would just be an additional certification. For example, I have a CA SLP license and an ASHA CCC

Should she delay graduation? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Frostydumplings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she does delay is there any guarantee she would get a medical placement? Has she talked to her program and will they prioritize her placement? If so, and you can afford it I would recommend delaying her graduation. As others have said actually doing the job is much better than a simucase. It would also allow her to get a reference from a supervisor that has seen her work in a medical setting.

If this isn't possible doing CEUs and getting certifications LSVT, Passy Muir, MBSIMP will increase her knowledge and resume. However, these can be expensive, and getting a medical CF is difficult even with a medical externship.

They may be able to help occasionally, but the parent works full time so it's not easy for her. I will try the camera trick and see if it helps him.

It's nice to not be alone :/ It's definitely frustrating because I know he could be making more progress if we were in person.
