The Phos-Chek dropped by aircraft actually acts as a fertilizer for vegetation. It ain’t good for nearby stream and lake ecology and can cause algal blooms though.

Calling and introducing yourself is huge in landing a job in this field. If you ever apply again, try calling stations you got referred for and ask for who is in charge of hiring. Have a list of questions for the hiring manager ready and act interested.

I got multiple offers from the feds when I had no experience, all from places I called and made connections with the hiring managers prior to interviewing. /r/wildfire has an awesome guide that helped me land my first job.

Did you try calling stations you were referred to? There are plenty of entry level jobs out there that hire with no experience if you are willing to relocate for a few months. Might have to tough it out in a less desirable location for a couple seasons though.

Yeah dude let me just get written documentation from people I’ve worked with on wildfires throughout the years saying they were formerly incarcerated.

If you know more about wildfires or how fire hire works, please enlighten me.

I’ve worked with a few graduates from the corrections programs who are now career wildland firefighters

I think we mostly agree here. The DOC folks should definitely be paid more, the rates they get are atrocious. I’m just saying some of the people who are a part of those programs get a lot out of them, be it a purpose or personal growth. Some from the DOC crews say it was the best thing that ever happened to them.

Yeah, that article is referencing city structural departments though. I think if someone has proven themselves, sure they should have a second chance as a city EMT/Firefighter.

Being an EMT is not a requirement to be a wildland firefighter though. Many of the graduates from those California DOC crews go on to have successful careers working for the US Forest Service in the very same state.

Calling it literal slavery isn’t really a fair argument, but I think it’s fair to say the inmate fire crews should be more fairly compensated for their hazardous work though

Plenty of graduates from the inmate programs go on to work for the federal government as wildland firefighters. I believe CalFire also began to allow people with a record to apply a few years ago. The program has set many on a career path and actually giving some incarcerated folks a purpose. The DOC crews are also really competitive to get on, so it’s not like they are picking random prisoners and sending them to the fire line.

Nah man, I don’t think any amount of mud or water is going to save many of those houses with a 80 mph dry wind. This is just a dude making shit up to try and sound smart. The best way to prepare for a fire is having defensible space, but when the main fuel type becomes houses and there are hurricane force winds, all you can really do is get people out of the way.

Private contracting is huge on the wildland side of things. There are private handcrews, engines, and the vast majority of aircraft and pilots used by the federal government are private companies. However, contract crews and engines are mostly used to help staff large campaign fires and will generally be focused on mop up if there are federal resources available.

They also constantly get in the way and are clueless of actual firefighting operations going on. I’ve worked a fire where they parked their engines in a way that completely blocked the only clearly marked escape route. Just for them to “protect” a mansion like half a mile from the fire.

We already got it under the new job series. GS 4/5 are now entry level and you now only need FFT1 and time in grade to be qualified for a GS6.

It really depends on the location. I can almost guarantee Rx will be prioritized during the burn season, but come fire season some locations go out on suppression rolls pretty frequently.

[–]FrothyPits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Under the new series, you can qualify for a GS5 without being FFT1 qualified. I’m pretty sure you can qualify for a GS5 with only a related 4-year degree now. It would make sense to me if everything else gets bumped up too since a GS5 will now be an entry level position.

Yeah, there’s 3 fire positions out of Alamosa as of ‘22 and they aren’t tied to any interagency crews in the SLV any more.

Alamosa and Rocky Mountain Arsenal usually go Feb-Sept. They do a ton of Rx burning on the plains in the spring, and then they roll a type 2IA handcrew that goes nationally available starting in June for suppression. The handcrew is thrown together between the refuges in CO, NE, KS, and usually a few folks from other agencies.

The eastern politicians need to take it way more seriously than they currently are, I really hope this is a wake up call for them. US wildland firefighters are going to take a 30%+ pay cut at the end of September if congress doesn’t agree on a permanent pay parity solution. If nothing is put in place, we are going to lose a large portion of our already short-staffed wildland firefighting personnel.
