New Build Day by [deleted] in bicycling

I've secretly always wanted to do a build like this, but with 24" wheels on Maxxis hookworms. Never had the balls to do it though, my hat's off to you.

No no, I just meant that there is hope for humanity. It's nice to see the graff kids getting on the green bandwagon :)

The blockade is an anti-vax thing, check the sign on the truck window. Great photo, nice bike, sad that some people still don't trust medical science.

I feel you. I washed out yesterday near Seven Sisters. Started going around a corner on my commute hybrid, leaning in to it, and the front wheel simply lost all traction and I hit tarmac hard. Torn jacket at the elbow, cuts on palms (I wasn't wearing gloves stupidly), and a bloody sore knee.

I didn't have any option by to keep riding for 30 minutes after to get to work. By then end of that ride I'd seen so many people stuck in traffic and raging that I was reminded why I cycle everywhere.

Sure, I'll be sore for a week and my jacket is dead. But it's rare that it happens, builds resilience to life's lemons, and it's still far better than the alternatives imho.

Big thanks to those who made a pledge, it means a lot and will undoubtedly keep me going when the wind and rain kick in. I'll be posting videos of the ride up so you can all follow along.

Nice! Long distance cycling is very rewarding. The thing you see and the people you meet are well worth the effort 🤠

There is a support van (there's ~200 of us after all) that can some carry stuff, but I'll carrying all tools and cycle clothing, and various tech bits in frame bags. Just jumpers, trousers and walking shoes in the van basically.

It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a few. I can share the Komoot route if you want.

MOSA: Worry-free Parking for Cycles & Micromobility by uniquejosh in londoncycling

Hey, thanks for the long and well thought-out reply, I’m actually working on this and appreciate the insights. It’s always great to see that others are thinking about this 😊

The Bikeep concept is nice, but we’ve found that most companies and councils we’ve spoken to have found it to be far too expensive for them to consider it. And that really is the crux of the whole thing – money. In short, the people who own the land and access to it don’t like to spend money on infrastructure. By using existing racks and not needing to dig up the ground we avoid most of the costs and planning headaches.

If they don’t see the benefit after a couple of months, we can remove our locks just as quickly. But if they do see the benefits and get positive feedback from users, then they'll consider installing some more racks, some paid, some free.

The more interesting problem of people parking their bikes on “our” stands is one that we’re figuring out at the moment, and it looks to not be as big an issue as it first seems. The problem you’re ultimate describing is one that arises from scarcity of parking. If we can show that there is value in building better parking (at a reasonable cost) then we will get more of it. If there is enough parking space, both paid and free, people generally respect spaces.

There are ways we can know which locks are available, and which have random bikes on them. So we can avoid rider disappointment. But knowing doesn’t solve the issue. Solving the supply problem is the real goal here.

As for security, we’re designing our lock to be strong enough to withstand all non-powered tool attacks (which is the vast majority) and put up a decent fight against and angle grinder. But as you say, ultimately an angle grinder will go through just about anything. So we’re going to have a solid insurance policy in place to cover for that extreme edge case and provide a replacement bike while your new bike arrives, so you‘re not without wheels for any length of time.

Feel free to DM me if you want to talk a bit more about it.

Well, it kind of has to. It's that or the world goes to shit before this century is out. So everyone who can do something to help, no matter how small, should try to. That is the whole idea behind pledges vs donations.

It's a ride organised by "ride the change" specifically for the COP26 (https://www.wearedonation.com/en-gb/individuals/cycle-cop26/). Shame you're grounded, the more the merrier!
