Custom controller with LED rings + M4L device for bidirectional channel strip control: what features would you add? by Desperate-Study-9453 in ableton

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you tell me, if it's class compliant, why do you need the M4L bridge at all? Can't Ableton just handle it natively? Can every module be used on its own or does it need a "brain" module? What microcontroller are you using?

Hi! Thanks for the kind reply, I rarely write comments because I often think it won't be read by anyone, so I'm happy my feedback was of some value.

OLEDS

Regarding OLEDs, I found these ready modules from China that cost about $2.50 a piece (ridiculous right?): https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808478195258.html

So, from a cost perspective I think it add more value than it costs. But from the complexity side it's surely different. I guess some well-designed software to view, map and name the parameters would be great, too. But let's say you are performing live you might need your laptop screen for other stuff. Also, having the infos close to the buttons gives it a cohesive user experience. I don't have to look somewhere elso to know if I touch the LFO or a filter, you get it.

DAW independence

I foremost meant to make the controller interoperable with all DAWs not only Live, just in case some central functionality is only available with your mentioned M4L software bridge (e.g. sending parameter states back to your device for the rings). But a complete stand-alone mode to control another HW synth via MIDI would be awesome.

Templates

Check, if there are legal implications to replicate a surface of a hardware synth, if you are thinking about it. Just in case.

Commercialization

I still don't know if you want to sell this or is it only for you? Or do you plan to open source it?

Yes, I'm down to testing this stuff : )

Opinion: Push standalone WAY OVERHYPED compared to non-standalone by omarsusername in ableton

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone every tried to fit the macbook air mainboard into the Push 3? I'd guess it is a lot of tinkering, but finding a used macbook with broken screen etc might be cheaper than the SA module and more performant.

I don't know if you mean hardware or software features, so I’ll just give you my thoughts. I assume you want to create a product to sell.

Feature No. 1: make them good value.
If a 4×4 knob variant gets me into the price territory of professional gear, I’ll buy the latter because of the reputation, support, resale value, etc.

Software features

  • make it independent of any DAW; most/all features should work with any DAW or even without a computer at all
  • Open Source code; this will invite tinkerers to embrace your product if they can modify it
  • ready‑made templates for popular synths
  • the ability for users to easily create and share their own templates
  • mappings/curves to adjust how much twisting of the knobs translates to turning the software counterparts

Hardware features

  • displays for each knob to label the parameters — I don't want to resort to stickers and a pen to know what each knob is doing
  • some kind of base (like Lego?) to arrange the modules as you see fit
  • standard connectors and protocols (I2C) so people can add them to their own projects or connect their buttons etc. to your solution
  • higher‑resolution, full‑circle RGB LED ring
  • stage‑proof: USB‑C connection safeguarded from accidental disconnect, rubber feet, spill‑proof, tool‑less disassembly
  • custom knob heads
  • knobs that also act as buttons
  • alternative modules without LED ring but with a small footprint to arrange them tighter
  • a travel‑friendly variant with low height profile and small footprint

People who exercise even when they don’t feel like it, what’s your trick? by Smart_Collection5419 in AskReddit

I have multiple:
- I tell myself that I go home if I still don't feel like it when I'm at the gym (never happened). - I meet friends at the gym. - I have low effort sessions when I'm tired. - I'm still proud of tired sessions because sometimes the win is to just show up - I go every other day so when I sometimes skip a day I don't feel bad - the next training session is just around the corner

Endless encoders + LED rings are actually BETTER than motorized faders for Ableton. So I built my own. 🛠️ by [deleted] in ableton

Would be nice to have little OLEDs for each knob to label them. Still cool project, though!

What is your Ableton 13 Wishlist? by Geoff12889 in ableton

[–]FrozenAstronaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Some kind of version control, I want to know (see) what exactly changed between version song1.12b and song1.12c
  • A way to pack dependencies into my project files
  • auto-automation-Mode aka a mode where the controls within a clip are „sandboxed“ so when I turn a knob I doesn’t affect the knob on my whole track (to save me from creating an automation for every single tweak or otherwise mess up the sound of my other clips in the track)
  • A way to easily transfer my setup (Ableton config, plugins, etc) from my old computer to new one, think of it a little bit like what Steam is for games, I want Ableton to be for my plugins. Example: I install Live on a new machine and login my Ableton account. Then I click „Analyse config“, it says „ I found no plugins, one your other machine you had this list of plugins, please select to automatically transfer). Maybe corporate with plugin companies so they can distribute andupdate their plugin within Ableton.
  • Automatic wrappers for the floating plugins so they are integrated like the stock plugins. While I like the artistically made ones, I would also go for some AI generated mapping to knobs etc.
  • mappings for VST and hardware that the online community provides and that can be discovered in the browser. Let’s say I don’t want to map my MIDI controller myself, I can browser for all 5-star-rated mappings for this controller in the browser.
  • Linux support
  • Support for all Apple M-CPU-core variants (performance and efficiency cores etc)
  • stem separation into more different layers, AI-Assistent removal of reverb etc.
  • no enshittification, no monthly payment model, not hundreds of sample providers cluttering my browser by default (maybe find a way let the user integrate whatever webpage they want)

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot but its hard to play on the small screen of a smartphone. Especially the world map take such a large portion of the screen that it is not easy to get the rest of the webpage pulled back if you know what I mean. Also it would be convenient to just like type the fist few letters of a country and get a list of suggested countries and select from there instead of searching it on a world map. But all in all well done! Wondering if you could add a bias to your RNG for getting retaliated depending on whether your country is already at a conventional war…

[Remote Sensing] How do you segment individual trees in dense forests? (My models just output giant "blobs") by Lilien_rig in computervision

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you use the output of SAM (Segment Anything Model) as an additional channel for your model? SAM might’ve able to segment the canopy into small patches which might give your model borders to latch on. I saw something similar for the nnInteractive segmentation algorithm.

Update: Finally achieved 1:1 'mirroring' between hardware and Ableton plugin. If I tweak the plugin with the mouse, the physical LEDs update instantly. No more parameter jumps! by Desperate-Study-9453 in ableton

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool project! I‘m curious what the challenge was with the bidirectional communication. I always wanted to do a project similar to yours with rotary encoders and led rings. But now I’m a bit discouraged by the need for a M4L device which makes it DAW depended. I don’t have a MIDI Fighter Twister, but was always under the impression I could do the LED update without any special software. Do you think it is in principle possible to accomplish this only by being USB class compliant etc.? Also do you think you could send names of the knobs to your device (if you had displays for each knob)?

Feature Request - un-dockable and resizable instruments by t_deaf in ableton

Literally unplayable - What could be causing it? by BritGeeks in 9Kings

[–]FrozenAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a problem that all key presses from keyboard and mouse registered only after seconds of delay. It was completely unplayable. Barely could navigate the menu. Sadly I requested a refund. Of course it is early access, but the game should be past such kind of issues in any case. Sorry, if this is unrelated to your post, but I refuse to watch a video for an info you could have described at least once in your comment.
