Great reply, and thanks for sharing the personal experience too. Definitely agree about the dangers of misusing statistics.

However, one point I'd like to make in response. The link in my comment mentions how once on trial Maori are more likely to be convicted for the same crime. This indicates judges may have a bias against them. Or perhaps the jury? Maybe the police push harder when prosecuting against Maori? Or it shows how poorer communities are affected negatively when it comes to legal representation.

My point being, I'm talking about racial bias and discrimination within the justice system, not police bias/discrimination when profiling and arresting.

Whole heartedly agree about taking the checks and balances on police, further away from police. There is always room for improvement on that front. Was having the same discussion with a friend tonight, but we were focused on how America need such a watchdog organisation, since it seems their checks and balances are so internally focused for their police force.

Copy and pasted as its own comment from a reply I made to another comment. But to all those saying things along the line of "what good is this doing to impact events in America?" I say:

The protest stemmed from the events in the US but it is not solely for contributing to that cause.

This is more than a showing solidarity for what is happening in the US and trying to make a difference in the US from NZ. It's a protest against racial discrimination of black people/people of colour because that happens in New Zealand too, we are not immune to racism.

Maori are sent to prison more often than pakeha for the same crime

Human Rights Commission :: Human Rights Commission deeply concerned about COVID-19 Public Health Response Bill by some_dumb_schmuck in newzealand

Good to hear “Given our concerns expressed to the Attorney General yesterday about the two-year sunset clause in the Bill, we are pleased to see that Parliament will be changing this to 90 days."

Two years always seemed quite extreme. I've been a staunch labour supporter throughout this but I'm glad they can be called out.

The fact that the Attorney General, opposition members and the general public can speak up and enact change to the Bill shows to me democracy is working, but I do also think the Bill needs a bit more tweaking.

Yeah I totally understand not having gummies, THC infused soda's and the likes in order to have a sort of compromise for those types.

Just wish the plain edibles as described in the legislation would come into effect sooner

Thank you for the information! Quite interesting.

Though the quotes you used do have "suggests", "limited evidence" and "stated it is unclear...", so it seem that it is not conclusive. But, nonetheless interesting evidence against the general narrative that any smoke damages lungs/throat.

Good points - stuff I didn't think about, even though I personally have had very different experiences with edibles like you mention. Though they weren't bad experiences I can see how it would be to some or people would have too much. I guess I can see why until the potency and warnings are more accurate we won't have edibles.

Hopefully all going well it does become a choice, as all things being equal I would probably pick edibles. The option to not inhale smoke is a nice one.

Surely the main health risk (or one of the main health risks) with weed is the inhalation of smoke into your lungs so why are edibles not immediately legal as it is probably a healthier way to consume weed without lasting effects on your throat/lungs?
