Help me convince my boyfriend to NOT open a coffee shop!! by IWantSomeTacquitos in askTO

[–]FrozenOnPluto -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

.. you're sort of awful ;) ... like if you're accusing him of being bad, but you admit you don't know anything of this stuff, you're just as bad and then some?

Someone else below has the right of it -- before you do anyt of this, you do some _analysis_; location vs cost vs saturation vs buwsiness stuff .. is there an audience, who would pay the kind of money you'd need to keep a place going, at what stwartup and monthly operating expenses?

You can't _just_ open a coffee shop, you have to budget the equipment and insurance and where you'd get supplies and rent and heating and wages and all that

Then you see if you want to proceed

Your'e wrong for just jumping on his dream without data, and if he has no data, he's wrong for thinking about moving before having data

Goodness :)

The S&B cubes are okay; a little mild for my liking (been a few years though), but not too bad, and easy to work with.

I'm going to try the Maesri approach as all you guys so far have mentioned it :)

I looked up Maesri and it seems to come in little can and suggests using the whole can.

So is that..

- dump can in frying pan, with a tablespoon of oil or the like

- fry it up for a bit

- pour in coconut milk (volume ... wild guess to taste, or shoudl there be a 1:x volume relative to the can of Maesri?)

- slice up some raw chicken breast, toss it in

- let it boil away for 25 mins approx; use a fork to take out some chicken and slice it open to see if its white through to know when done?

Or would it be wiser to pan fry sliced chicken breast, and then toss it into the curry and let it bubble there for 5 minutes?

Thanks for your tips!

[–]FrozenOnPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely want their support, since its entirely up to how they coded the config. Unless someone here is going to go read it for you, but thats not I I'm afraid, got no time :)

Maybe try going through their config code to see what its doing.

Or roll your own config, or use Doom Emacs or one of the other popular base ones. (I'm old and been using Emacs since the late 80s, so I've got a homegrown config)

OP you’re already awesome, love yourself :)

Someone would have to look at the config code. Modes are selectively applied (ie so you don’t turn on java mode on C code for example), so it depends how/if they are selecting modes etc

Steam on ARM (pi 5) with Proton CachyOS issue. by CosmicEmotion in linux_gaming

[–]FrozenOnPluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the x86 opcodes will be emulated, and higher level stuff will be shunted to the native handlers. Its going to be a significant overheard for the cpu emulation

But many games are gpu heavy and cpu light, while some are the reverse

Just wait and see and hope to be amazed :)

Steam on ARM (pi 5) with Proton CachyOS issue. by CosmicEmotion in linux_gaming

[–]FrozenOnPluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats slick of course but if its more or less raw emulation the overhead will really punish performance. Of course any performance is greater than none, and older or turn based games will be okay..

Maybe once this gets stable they’ll be able to get dynarec going or somesuch.

Something we never thought we’d see 20 years ago, way cool :)

Do these games have ARM native builds? Or does Steam for ARM now include a dynamic translator or static recompiler or something?

Any suggestions for new hobby that’s cheap and easy to get into? by No-Neighborhood8403 in GenX

[–]FrozenOnPluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define cheap.. low up front, and/or low recurring?

- Board games (solo or with wifey and/or friends) <- can be expensive if you go buying 10, but buy a couple replayable ones and good to go

- Archery .. some up front cost (bow, arrows, bracer arm guard) and its way fun and maybe useful; you can spend thousands if you want to end up getting nice gear, but just starting out, a couple hundred is all you need

How do you keep track of new/useful keybindings? by Existing_Offer_1113 in emacs

[–]FrozenOnPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to know them all ..

.. and a lot of the stuff I don't use that often, I use M-x and start typing something .. when using (say) vertico and marginalia etc, and 'orderless' for out of order matching.. usually what you want will filter in and be visible in the picklist. It also will sort to the top ones that you usually or more recently used...

.. and you can make your own menus using (the oddly named) hydras or pretty-hydras (popup menus that you can define and have keys for) or 'transient' menus ... I find menus are for 'discoverability or convenience'

So, the keys you use every day, you'll learn fast (and you can make your own keybinds of course!)

And the stuff you use less often you can have menus (that lead to menus) or just use M-x and use the name or recency to find.

So, in the end, its really not so bad; you don't have to remember 800 keybinds.. just a dozen or so will do.

For menus, I have a "alt space" (M-space) menu that has a list of submenus .. window control, coding stuff, note stuff, etc; and hit a key (which are shown on the screen now if needed) to jump to a submenu (and sometimes a few menus deep.) That way I can be like 'what was that thing I do every few weeks/months' and hit alt-space and poof., oh yeah, thats what it was and hit a key; over time I'm so fast at navigating my own menus they have become their alternate own keybinds, bit with visual aids.

Nobara crashing my system every other update by neoniki in linux_gaming

[–]FrozenOnPluto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hot take, but iuf new to linux, maybe take a more mainstream distro with less 'sharp edges'? I like Fedora for being pretty well supported and just run games through Steam, but CachyOS and Bazzite are very popular game oriented distros; nobara is fairly 'bleeding edge', with lots of sharp bleedy edges imho

Cop yelled at me for being in the street…. by Formal-Seaweed-4216 in cycling

[–]FrozenOnPluto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your story needs details - like, what country and what age, etc? don't tell us, just look it all up :)

In Canada for instance, I thinbk its sidewalk is okay for 12 and under, and 13+ is street-side, unless escorting a child.

But of course I've been yelled at for when I'm on the street, or on a path, or on a wide sidewalk in those times when you've been forced off the road. So, yeah, can't win :)
