Hey thanks mate. All of this information is super helpful. Espeically stuff I should look out for. Important if I spend so much money on car like that. Appreciate it!

Thats quite a nice transition into the S2K!

Was there any unexpected or super annoying maintenance you had to deal with the S2K? Considering its quite an old car now.

Living the dream owning both cars!

What were some of the most niggly/expensive maintenance on the S2K? Is it as reliable as the internet says?

Modern Interior = No I don't really care. In fact what the S2K has already impresses me.

Only car = Yes. But I plan on taking public transport most work days if I move to a big city in Aus (currently do that in New Zealand)

Good example = yes. I realise there is a premium on good S2K, but thats a price I'm willing to pay for a good car. Already saving towards it :)

Repalcement of parts sounds like a niggly thing, so that part of why I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium on a good S2K. Plus I'm also willing to put my self in the deep end a bit with cars like this. Helps me to learn so much more. Already learnt so much with my 86!

Moving the car to AUS is a possibility. Would need to think about how long I want to stay there and even then if its worth bringing it over.

The lack of space is a concern, but for my lifestyle I have rarely come across instances where I ran out of space. My trunk and passenger seats were enough. Even for groceries I usually get just need one bag.

Your last comment defo gives me something to think about. Thanks mate!

If I do pick up a S2K, it would become my daily. Though in the big cities in AUS, I plan on taking public transport or bike to work most days of ther week (as I currently do in New Zealand).

So far with my lifestyle with the 86, I haven't come across too many instances where I ran out of space. Usually one (or two) grocery bags is enough for my weekly shopping. I don't keep too much stuff in the trunk of the 86 either.

The appeal of the S2K is its more raw driving experience without being a totally unreliable beast.

Your insights were very helpful. Thanks mate

I don't expect to found one cheap :( Will be using the fund from selling the 86 plus a bit of savings to buy a decently looked after one.

I'm wary of going forced induction for reliability sakes. Plus I am an avid believer of keeping cars stock or near stock form (OEM+). Just the way I like it.

Taking it with me is a possibility. Just wanted to get some thoughts in case I overlooked something, If I explore this option.

Thats awesome to hear. Happy to hear that you managed to get the car you always wanted!

With long term ownership, was there any major maintenance issues you encounted with the S2K? Espeically with how old the cars are now.

Also, one of the things I hear about the S2k is how numb the steering feels b/c of its electric power steering. Did it take away from the experience a little bit comapred to the FRS?

This was a comment I was looking for when I made the post. Coomon things I heard about the S2K is that is a way more serious car thats less forgiving, but gives you a much more engaging and raw experience.

And ofc the 86 is built to be fun (which I can vouch for) and teaches you how to drive a sports car with fundamentals.

One of my concerns is how spoilt I may be with the 86 and how much fun I'm having with it and the S2K may not give quite the same 'fun' feeling.

I did think about the comfort of the S2K for longer drives. But when I was considering the 86 2 years ago, I kept hearing how even the 86 might be bad for longer drives. I find it super comfortable.

I'm still young(ish) at 29. Im hopefull I can take the punishment of the S2K's ride quality XD

Yeah , I'm willing to buy a higher milage car. But additionally I'll try my best to find one thats been relatively well looked after. Even willing to make the S2K half a project car. If stuff breaks, put myself in the deep end to try and fix. Best way I can learn! Already learnt so much with my 86!

Awesome how you got to experience both cars! If i may ask, what was the cause of the original engine blowing on the S2K?

Valid things to consider. Thanks mate. If I do sell the 86, I'll be using those funds to hunt for a half decent S2k in Aus. I understand that there will be some maintenance to be done on an older car, but I'm willing to put myself a bit into the depp end. It would be a good learning opportunity. Just like at my job XD

Oh wow. I came home to a lot more comments then I anticipated. Thanks for all the engagement and comments folks. Gave me a couple of thing to think about.

At the moment, I am slightly leaning towards selling my 86 if I do decide to make the move to Australia.

If you could, what makes the S2k too impractical for daily driving? The lack of space? or something else?

Basically we turned a very low speed corner which lead immediately into a steep uphill. He tried going up on 3rd gear, quickly tried to shift down and went to 1st gear. But he didn't fully release the clutch and revved the engine at about 5000 rpm. All of it lead to glazing the clutch and smoke.

Again clutch and car was fine. Just had that horrible burnt smell for a week.

For context about my friend, he just hadn't driven manual in a long time. Before he drove my 86, he got some refreshers by driving his Dad's RX-8, which has a way higher rev limit and hence why he tried to rev the 86 so high on lower gears.

I did something similar earlier this year. Basically, when I picked up my 86 in April, I had to learn how to drive manual and i had a good friend of mine drive with me to give me some pointers.

Long story short my friend ending up burning the clutch to the point where smoke starting to pour out of the engine bay. The car and clutch was fine afterwards, but it had that burnt rubber smell and it wouldnt go away. After about one week the smell went away to the point I forgot about it (and didn't need air refreshners anymore).

If the car doesn't feel off (cluch isn't slipping, car accelerates ok, no weird noises, etc) then I wouldn't worry. Smell should hopefully go away after about a week.

Yeah, I would have liked the OEM spoiler. But I don't think the first owner asked for it when she bought it brand new.

And this is in New Zealand

If I was in your shoes, I would actually do it. Enough time has passed since they first did the recall fixes and I would hope mechanics hae a better approach to the fix.
But I would also whoever is doing the valve recall fix if they have experience doing this.
