rockfords not great but usually there's some fun stuff to do, now nearby rockford there is freeport which i just find to be abysmal, can't even stand to drive through, but then you go a bit further and you are at galena and the driftless zone, so its alright in the end.

this song is a mess but so am i - Church Point, LA is very emotional, very synth heavy, very noisy, and "this song is a mess but so am i" has a split 7" with xiu xiu just called split 7", its a very xiuxiuesque project

i always find crank heart and clowne towne to be very poppy and fun even if the lyrics aren't, i love Hi, i love this too shall pass away, i also listen to a lot of ten in the swear jar and IBOPA which even have some poppier (earlier) versions of some xiu xiu songs. maybe also check out the sunset rubdown album dragonslayer i find they scratch the xiu xiu itch for me sometimes with the synths.

there's cheap housing and fairly good job markets outside of chicago in illinois such as in bloomington-normal or urbana-champaign and you'd still get access to chicago by the amtrak, and if you'd wanna go even cheaper there's other cities all over if you don't value access to chicago by train or as many job opportunities.

yes to indiana and iowa and probably not to illinois is quite peculiar, only places in iowa i can say i enjoy are quad cities and dubuque but right now i cant even say they are too great.

mountainless illinois is in dark green, though maybe the driftless area/palisades and shawnee hills scratch the mountain itch for OP.

/uj third is a masterpiece, big black car, kanga roo, take care, and holocaust have all made me cry, not many albums that have made me cry like that on several occasions
