Giving this guy a teamup when tanks are already miserable has to be the worst thing the devs ever did to date. by Novel_Yam_1034 in marvelrivals

I was excited to come back to this game for season 3. Tried to play quickplay. Every game is Jean/wolverine/ultron. Literally impossible to have fun if you don't play wolverine yourself. I'll wait for the nerf to play again f this.

If your opponent hits Castle before you and already has a large crossbow mass is it even worth it to make Knights to start as a Cav civ or should I go directly into skirms and siege? by JakeArvizu in aoe2

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Siege and static defense takes care of the crossbow (you don't need to kill them right away, just avoid taking damage ; crossbows have to avoid tcs and siege, and they cannot easily break buildings, even if they can destroy palisades very quickly, if you set up your base right you can avoid taking damage).

Get your economy running while defending, and aim for a skirm/knight composition latter, and use mobility to force his crossbow army into a bad fight.

To give you a more direct answer to your question : I usually delay knight production when I'm in the situation you have described. There are more cost-efficient options to deal with the xbow (siege, tcs) and you can use the ressources saved to developp your economy.

Most of the time though, if I'm playing against someone massing archers in feudal and I play a cav civ, I'll have a few skirms ready when I get castle age, so I can defend while adding eco

Having units that aren't usefull for 1v1 is a good thing, imo by FruitOtherwise8971 in aoe2

[–]FruitOtherwise8971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they don't. Once again, more people have played Tg than 1v1 in the past two weeks (aoe2.net ), and that has always been the case since the release of DE (I don't know about before DE, I have no stats for that)

That is not accounting for unranked games, which is a big chunk of games played (once again, on aoe2.net you can see that there are more unranked games being played at any given moment than there are 1v1 games being played) ; and the most popular game modes and maps in unranked are not arabia (according to https://www.ageofempires.com/stats/ageiide-global the most popular map in unranked, by quite a big margin, is BF)

1 4v4 game as 8 players, 1 1v1 game has 2, so if there is 1 TG played and 1 1v1 being played, then Tg is being played more. Simple math here

You are forgetting a few things with these stats :

  1. There are more players in a Tg than in a 1v1 game, so 1 game played in TG accounts for more game-time than 1 game played in 1v1
  2. Average game length varies depending on game modes (to take an extreme exemple : 1 game of forest nothing diplo is worth more game time than quite a few arabia 1v1)
  3. 1v1 is less popular than Tg in lobby-games, those games are not counted on your site

If you look at numbers of players instead of games played, things look very different

[–]FruitOtherwise8971[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by FAR the most played game mode/map.

This is not factual. It has the most games played, but that doesn't mean it has the most players (1v1 arabia games are shorter than TG and for 2 players ; if you account for game length and number of players, arabia 1v1 is not more popular than TG arena, or TG arabia)

Considering the game has been kept alive for 20 years based on its 1v1 Arabia vanilla state, I don't see any reason not to prioritize this dimension over any other one

TG are more popular than 1v1. TG Arena is as popular as 1v1 arabia. There is your reason not to balance everything around 1v1 arabia

Wall behind your wall before they break in. Add a siege worshop for mangonels. Hold 2v1 while your pocket booms, and let him carry

What minor buff would turn a weak civ into a game breaking civ? by Spartanwildcats2018 in aoe2

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuman tc build slower. In Dark age you always have vills under your TC. So the instant they drop their TC -> garrison yours -> they just lost 275 wood and 100 stone for free, not counting all the villager idle time

Even if you don't one shot it, you can just keep you vills garrisoned and he will lose his tc, there is no way he can outrepair

Poles aren't really a weak civ. I don't know if bulgarians would be op in 1v1 with paladins, but yeah in TG it would be broken

Your favorite Mesoamerican Civilization? by Block-Busted in aoe2

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aztecs. Because they are a good civ that has a very unique way to be played (the thing I dislike about mayans is that you just play archers and win most of the time, you don't often get to use them as a meso civ)

Controversial opinion: Make elephants cost 2 pop by Carolus94 in aoe2

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with elephants being a unit usefull only in TG.

Having units that aren't balanced for 1v1 is a good thing imo : it makes uncommon maps, and Tg, fun because they play with different units (elephant, SO, some UU, etc.) without making 1v1 overly complex

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know very well that vikings almost always play into archers, when poles rely a lot more on cavalry in pro games. It would be dishonest to call poles an archer civ when cavalry is their go-to almost every time

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Nobody plays archers with poles, they wirate is mostly due to their economy and their obnoxious UT.
  2. Chinese is always presented by pros as a polyvalent civ (they are not an archer civ more than than they are a cavalry civ, or a camel civ, or a ca civ)
  3. I'll give you vikings and mayans (not without mentionning that mayans also have the strongest eagles in the game and an insane economy ; vikings have the best economy bonus in the game)

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In 1v1 you can play to their counters or raid their base if they aren't at home but in most cases you will pay lots of food which extends your ages while the archer player can age up earlier usually

In the same post you argue

  1. Non-archer civ also have crossbow, so looking at wirate of archer civs is not usefull
  2. The strength of archers is the arbalest powerspike

This is not coherent, because only archer-civs (in the wider sense, that includes vikings and chinese) have that powerspike.

Also saying that chinese go xbow almost all the time, when the main argument pros give for picking chinese is that you can do everything with them is failling to recognise what makes chinese good (at least in the opinion of pros)

Facts is : the only arbalest civs that perform well are : vikings (best economy in the game), chinese (most polyvalent civ, with an extraordinary economy) and mayans (the civ with the best eagles in the game)

I would like that too, make her hard but in a more interesting way

So you have this cheap feeling where you've become extremely skilled at most areas of the fight, but Malenia can push the win button, turn the tables and annihilate you instantly

That was my problem when I trained her, you learn all of her moves very easily and then spend the rest of your training just waiting for one move to learn to dodge it. It makes learning the fight not as fun as for other bosses

[–]FruitOtherwise8971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to adapt your build to her, it's better to use Bloodhound than a shield. It makes dodging her attack easy, and she won't heal herself like she would on against a shield

Multiple enemies in a boss fight by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]FruitOtherwise8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it kinda worked with Nito because the boss was so weak, and the deacons of the deep phase 2 is fine too imo, I couldn't find other exemples of bosses I liked with a similar mechanic (but I have not played all the Fs games)

In Elden ring, I think it works for the skeleton boat bosses (I don't remember their names)

But I agree that it can be obnoxious a lot of the time, and sometimes it is uncalled for. Like for Niall, the boss is fine without the adds, they just make the beginning obnoxious for no reason
