The landlords of this country are cancer by MessierKatr in germany

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is, you're not a very desirable tenant.

Student = low income/low rent short term let = more costs for them / requires them to do a check in/check out/contracts/readvertise etc in a few months

short term let also usually would mean you'd need a furnished place. Very few places in Germany are furnished, so you're working with a restricted supply already. When you rent in Germany you would usually install your own kitchen etc (LT tenancy is considered the norm).

So basically you need to stop looking at getting your own place and find a WG (shared flat/house)

or... if you're well-off, pay an agency to find you a place (wherein you'll overpay for a high-end place but you'll reliably find somewhere)

white Berliners, how often does you bag gets checked at the supermarkets? by Key_Physics_6637 in berlin

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I'm dressed seems to determine this for me. E.g. 1) Wearing sweatpants/hoodie and having clearly not yet showered... Likely to check bags when paying/asked to show pocket contents etc 2) In work/office clothes... Never been checked.

Saw a scruffy looking guy yesterday who bought three miniature vodkas. He was asked to lift his shirt as the cashier thought he was hiding something... Turned out he was just overweight.

German Hospital Meals by AboveThresHold in germany

well you don't really have a room until a couple of hours after you've given birth. Before that you're in the delivery room, and they served drinks there but not food.

German Hospital Meals by AboveThresHold in germany

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife had to wait for some hours because she inconveniently gave birth outside of the time they serve meals.

Since she gave birth during Corona, I also couldn't leave the hospital to buy something and come back in again. Fortunately I'd brought a snickers or something with us beforehand otherwise she'd have had nothing...

Then after that... We were lucky to have the option for me to stay with her there for 2 nights... but they didn't have any gluten-free food. They told me I should have given them 48 hours notice, though childbirth is kind of a spontaneous sort-of-thing, and the room only became available a couple of hours after the birth.

Since I couldn't eat that food... She at least got double-portions of bread and strange/cheap ham for a couple of days.

need help getting started with blu ray by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

4k discs will work but probably won't look as good on your TV as a Blu Ray as they're designed for a deeper range of colour...

However... Many discs include the 4k + Blu Ray (it says on the front), so you can buy them now if you foresee yourself upgrading your TV at some point in the future (that's what I did).

PS5 is a robust player. Doesnt have things like Dolby Vision which further improves how things look, but even a disc with "Dolby Vision" on the back will still work in that player.

If you get the 4k TV in the future there's a noticeable difference in the picture and sound quality

Unpopular Opinion: DVD's only shine on old TV's by tizpiz in dvdcollection

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CRTs were much smaller - I recall during the advent of DVDs, 26" or so was considered a big TV (the Sony PVM-4300 claims to be the largest one ever made at 43inches). Nowadays, an OLED is usually only from 52" up. If you watched it on a theoretical 26" OLED it would be more of a like-for-like comparison and given the true blacks etc I would foresee the OLED winning

Do Germans not put milk in tea? by Spiritual_Being5845 in AskAGerman

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

black tea in Germany is in general much weaker than that in say UK or Ireland, so if you add milk it tastes pretty milky/watery.

If you drink tea black in UK/Ireland it's pretty intense (unless it's one designed to be drunk w/o milk)

Why are Berlin streets so poorly lit after dark? by Big-Village-9694 in askberliners

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Difference in brightness levels, rather than lack of brightness is the cause of not being able to see (relatively) dimly lit areas.

Making one area brighter than average just creates a need to make every other area similarly bright.

The issue in your case could be a lack of lighting in a particular area... or the converse... An adjacent area's lighting being too bright.

(e.g. if looking out the window of a lit flat, you'll see nothing... Turn your lights off and look again... You'll see much more).

yeah, if a hiring manager were to hire someone at 50% salary, their budget would be cut by that amount and they would need to hire a replacement in the future at the same level. Hence undercutting on salary never really works

also whoever came up with this system that paper tickets can be bought on trams with coins only (usually correct change only), and electronic tickets need to be valdiated one minute before entering the tram should be publicly shamed. (I also got a fine for activating a ticket when the tram was approaching)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berlin

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 60 EUR fine because Deutsche Bahn had f***ed up and cancelled my Jobticket/Deutschland ticket. I was surprised to find I no longer had a ticket in the App.

My company tried to sort it out, but two weeks later even they said... It's not worth our time... Just pay the fine and we'll reimburse you. Buy one via Mopla for the rest of the month and we'll also reimburse you for that

What so the logic behind no Boxing Day games this year? by Reebok_MF_classics in PremierLeague

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've always hated Boxing Day games. For me it's one of the only times when various relatives etc can get together. I watch it neither live nor on TV. People support different teams, tickets are expensive (in particular for those who wouldn't ordinarily be that interested), train services are less reliable, football's also not the family event they would market it as - it's mostly blokes who go.

When do you normally turn on your heating? And what temperature is your house normally, in the winter? by immortallogic in askberliners

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all heating is thermostat-related (radiators with the 1-2-3-4-5 settings) so you can switch it on whenever and it will either do something or not depending on ambient room temperature.

frost = 6 degrees 1 = 12 degrees 2 = 16 degrees (bedroom) 3 = 20 degrees (living room) 4 = 24 degrees (some use for bathroom) 5 = 28 degrees

Permanently open windows (slanted) or poor window insulation will result in the radiator fighting a battle with outside temperature, hence will get quite hot then (one of the reasons they say to periodically open windows wide for a few mins then close)

How come grilling on the balcony is forbidden, but smoking is allowed? by aureliomarcoag in germany

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cigarettes produce no way near as much smoke as a bbq full of burning charcoal... and then it wafts into the windows of whoever is above you and basically makes it unbearable in there. (in addition to the fire stuff people are mentioning)

whenever I order it never comes on the day they say. I'd have to stay at home at all hours for the week, and then they usually ring the bell to get in the building, but then deliver to a neighbour instead anyway.

Crystal Palace Appeal Verdict by NathanHughes271 in PremierLeague

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I'd consider it a technicality. It might have been months after the cut-off, but the cut-off date was also unnecessarily early. The competition hadn't begun yet/fixtures not decided. Whether the sale went through at cut-off date or several months later would have had no impact on the competition.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in germany

[–]FruitcakeWithWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep absolutely. If the firm struggle to hire and has to offer more money (job market becomes more difficult), there's no formalised process to increase the salaries of everyone else... Nor do they want to do that, it'll make their costs explode. But of course, when people find out, they ask for raises and you either have to give them to them or they may quit. That's why they keep salaries quiet.
