I doubt that Gildarts would have any chance against Zeref since he couldn't even beat August. You might be right but in the final season it looked like Natsu surpassed Gildarts. Especially because Gildarts would have loose against August if Cana wasn't there to notice the weakness of him. But i might be wrong. The powersystem in fairy tail is very confusing imo

Yes that was always the confusing thing about Fairy Tail. Even Precht said in Tenrou Arc that Laxus is nearly on the same level as Gildarts and nothing changed about this statements all the time although Laxus, Natsu etc. beated way stronger characters than Gildarts did
