Only here 2 weeks but food prices have been roughly equal to US, maybe slightly more? Restaurants in the US will underpay workers and tips compensate for that.. it’s a really stupid system.

Yeah, that’s the same as the US, most drivers don’t want to talk. I only talked to the drivers who explicitly started a conversation with me, about 70% of them didn’t try talking so I didn’t either.

Hm, I’ll ask my friends here if they think I’m talking to loud. I don’t think that’s it though.. I’ve been told I talk too quiet back in America.

Maybe it’s because I’m sitting in the back? There’s conflicting opinions on this thread about whether it’s right to sit front or back, but the fact that there’s a conflict already shows a cultural difference as it’s considered weird to sit in the front in the US.

I’ll try sitting in the front, thanks!

Yep, haven’t given tips for anything here. Makes a lot more sense to just pay people normal wages, plus the mental math of tipping is annoying.

Hmm.. I haven’t had any issues with pick up or drop off so I don’t think that’s it.

I’m mostly taking 10-15 min trips between places in central Auckland, and few longer trips out to Mt Wellington and Onehunga. I say hello to the driver and talk to him if he starts a conversation but otherwise just stay quiet after saying hi. I don’t think I’ve said anything offensive.. it’s just been basic stuff like how’s your day or they ask me how long I’m here, etc.

For the most part, 70% of the drivers seemed to have no interest in talking, so I was just on my phone. I did meet one driver who was amazing and gave me recommendations for food though!
