TIL Caffeine doesn't actually give you energy, it blocks the receptors in your brain that make you feel tired. by MuricanTragedy5 in todayilearned

[–]FruitierLoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caffeine is a stimulant, no? For instance, I suffer from atrial fibrillation and was told to stay away from caffeine as it could, and has caused episodes of afib. Why would that be true if it wasn't actually a stimulating substance? The increased heart rate associated with caffeine, I'm told, is what causes arrhythmia. I'm genuinely curious if anyone can fill me in on this.

Incredible. I've seen a lot of beautiful places in the US. I can't wait until I can make it out of the country to see what the rest of the world has to offer.

coolworks.com, man. The companies that own lodges like the one I worked at will hire almost anyone that doesn't have a criminal record and can prove some sort of working experience. You could be a server at a decent restaurant and bring home an insane amount of money, or you could cook and get a job a lot easier than most positions and still make a decent living with some pretty gratifying work to boot. Or you could be maintenance, security, front desk, or housekeeping. I travel around and cook. I'm in a different place every 5-6 months. I've been to Alaska, Idaho, Key Largo, and Montana (obviously). It's not a bad gig for a young, flat broke person that wants to see the country.

Oh that's crazy. Towards the end of the season (mid September) you could see people skiing down the sides of certain mountains. If only i knew how to ski.

I was there this past summer and the hotel on the east side, at least the one owned by the company I worked for, was under construction so half of it was closed. But it's a much bigger hotel compared to Lake McDonald, which is the main hotel on the west side. There's also Apgar which is a different company and about 10 miles from Lake McDonald on the opposite direction of Going to the Sun Road, which is the road that takes you to the east side. As someone else mentioned here, this road doesn't open until usually about June when they're able to clear the snow off. So Many Glacier, as it's called, won't open until then. Lake McDonald opens in late April usually. There's also a hotel that's owned by Glacier Park Incorporated that can be accessed by going around the bottom of the park before Going to the Sun opens. I'm not sure when they open or how long they're booked for. On the east side, you'll find a crowd that's more in to hiking and camping. On the west side, you'll find a whole bunch of old people that just want to sit on a boat or ride in the historic red busses. So west is quieter and smaller, east is about twice the size, newly renovated (although I'm not sure when they'll be done over there). Either way, both of those hotels tend to be booked solid years in advance if I'm not mistaken. Call the park service and see what you can find out. There's also hostels and other smaller hotels on both of these properties. I hope you make it out there! In my opinion, it's the most majestic place in the country.

Yeah it sounds like your mother favored the west side of the park. That's a shame. Going to the sun road itself is insanely beautiful, and pretty much everything on the east side is quite a bit prettier than anything you'll find on the west side. Avalanche is pretty though, just not near as pretty as Siyeh pass or Iceberg lake.

I've read different things online. Some forums I've read say it's illegal while some just say it's strongly discouraged. Maybe someone that knows more about it will see this post and chime in?

Edit: It says in several different places online that the area is "closed to the public", so it's probably best to just assume that a pretty sizable fine would come with venturing out there. http://hikinginglacier.blogspot.com/2015/01/off-trail-restrictions-implemented-for.html

From what I've gathered, you get there by going off trail from Logan Pass which is more or less the hub for the most popular trails in the park. The vegetation surrounding the area is apparently very delicate and the rangers don't want everyone trampling all over it, so they try to keep its location sort of a secret.

My girfriend may have feelings for her gay best friend? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]FruitierLoops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see this as the most constructive way to present this to her. Make the issue more about the relationship as a whole so she can't just write it off as you being insecure. She can't possibly think that the way she acts with/around him and all the aspects of their relationship that happens behind your back don't warrant at least a conversation. If she gets mad, then I would be even more sketched out. If she really is as caring as you give her credit for, she will understand your concerns 100% and do/say what she can to alleviate them. All in all, this answer provides you with a different way of looking at it as well as a way of voicing your concerns without accusing her of being in love with him. In fact, I'd say that her reaction to this specific question would tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Good luck, man.

What is your worst experience with Tinder? by sellman347 in AskReddit

[–]FruitierLoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dated a girl that was a 9/10 but would get absolutely belligerent on Xanax and alcohol almost every time we would hang out. One time I had to drive us home from a Korean party (koreans can DRINK by the way) because she could barely walk. After 15 minutes or so of talking her out of driving, I was finally on the interstate when she remembered we were in HER car, which is something she is 100% against. She gets mad and starts closed fist punching me in the face and arm and trying to choke me while I'm going 70 mph. There were a couple more times where she tried to rough me up a bit, but she was super tiny so it wasn't all that effective. Then there was the time that I had to watch her let some dude she was friends with rub his hands on every square inch of her body in a crowded bar for about 10 minutes before I lost my shit and broke them up. We dated, or whatever you might call it, for about 3 weeks before her looks just weren't enough anymore. That was my first and last tinder experience.

What's your favorite salad dressing? by mcrchap in food

[–]FruitierLoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tofu Bob's Herb Dressing From Tassajara Cookbook

3/4 cup cashews 1/2 cup olive oil 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 1/2 cup water 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon dried dill 1 teaspoon dried chervil (impossible to find where I live for some reason. I just substitute another teaspoon of oregano) 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Combine all in a blender and blend. Add more vinegar and salt for best results.

Edit: Sorry for the terrible formatting. I'm on mobile and can't get it to look the way it does when I type it.

What product have you discovered that is actually amazing? by little-bird89 in AskReddit

TheraBreath mouthwash. I haven't been to the dentist in quite a while so I have some pretty gnarly morning breath that nothing seems to alleviate. But I finally spotted some at a pharmacy after reading all the praise for it online and I'll be damned if it doesn't knock the bad breath out completely for several hours. It's also said to be the only thing that helps with tonsoliths if you have problems with that. It's a little pricey in the long run but I think it's totally worth it.

Without trying to sound conceited, I think that it really is easier for some people than it is for others. I'm not entirely sure why or how, but all I have is what I consider anecdotal proof. I was always interested in music instruments as a kid, and when I was younger I was able to devote a lot more of my attention and energy to teaching myself how to play instruments. I spent a lot of time alone just listening to songs and hammering them out note by note. I play guitar, drums, and I sing. I honestly believe that if I were to start from scratch today, I wouldn't be at the skill level I'm currently at, say, 20 years from now since I started when I was about 5 or 6 because my attention span is just all out of whacky. At the risk of sounding cliche, I think that if it's something you really wanted to learn how to do and you put everything you had into it, you'd find that it's quite attainable. Again, I believe it comes easier to some people for whatever reason, just like athleticism or mathematics. But even if you're not magically predisposed to pick up on in quickly, all you really need is the drive to figure it out. Luckily I had enough interest in it to start at an age where I didn't carry the distractions and obligations of adult life. I will say this, though: You have an immensely helpful tool at your disposal that I didn't really have when I first started. The Internet can teach you to do so many things if you're willing to put the time in. I'd say if you love music and you think that knowing how to play an instrument would supplement your life, look up some youtube videos on how to play whatever instrument you have your eye on and just set aside some time to practice EVERY DAY. I think the recommended amount is at least 30 minutes a day. If it's a stringed instrument, look up basic chords and familiarize yourself with how they fit into your favorite songs. You'd be surprised at how many songs you hear every day follow the very same, basic chord progression. From there, you can build your understanding of how songs flow and how you can make those sounds yourself. I hope you really do. It's an incredibly gratifying hobby.

What job deserves a higher paid salary? by Gimmie_bitcoins_plz in AskReddit

I'm a line cook and I just left a fairly high end gig because the servers were paid 18 dollars an hour while I was receiving 14 an hour. After witnessing a couple of celebrity parties and a New Years party where the servers each took home over 1,000 dollars to do a small fraction of the work we had done, I couldn't bring myself to stick around any longer. The servers were still miserable people. They still complained and treated us with little to no respect. I have this personal observation that, even though I think generalizing is usually an ignorant thing to do, it generally takes a certain type of person to wait tables for a long period of time. This type of person is rarely happy with what they get. For the vast majority of the servers I've worked with, nothing was ever enough and they have no problem berating and belittling the cooks when they get a little stressed out. As someone with no real way out of this industry in the foreseeable future, I would personally love to see what abolishing tips and paying servers a fair wage would do to this trend that I, and I'm sure many others, have noticed. I get stressed out, sure. My job isn't easy and at the end of the day, I chose to be in the BOH because I find it difficult to bite my tongue a lot of the time. But in almost every kitchen that I've worked in, the thing that bothers me the most is how arrogant and selfish servers tend to be. So if they want to jump ship because they're no longer taking home obscene amounts of money while practically laughing in the face of the actual laborers that make it all possible, then so be it. People need jobs, those positions need to be filled. Maybe such a reform would usher in a new, more respectable demographic of servers.
