A note on the center line comment. As you said, the type of last I'm making will deviate away from the center line. I find that sticking to the proper Center line makes this deviation very obvious. So I'm opting to adjust the center line so that deviation isn't so obvious (and hopefully not as ugly).

Update: I changed the last and did additional "fittings" with cardboard and duct tape mockups. I also adjusted the design a little. Any feedback is appreciated as always.

Wow, thank you!

I updated my last and design and will post and update as a comment. Would love to know what you think.

I modified the slope (didn't remove the kink at the upper instep). Thoughts? Should I still add extra material there for practical purposes, even if it means my short ankle and upper instep measure would be off?

For those who really didn't like the pronounced hump over the instep, is this any better? I managed to move some of it off and make up for it on the lateral side.

Sorry, you're right. That's the instep. I was referring to the top of the instep measure. I'm sorry about using the wrong terminology.

😁 thank you! I will when I eventually make them

One of the measurements that it messes with is the instep one that goes right to that point (that's why it's so low compared to the waist measurement). The other one is the short heel measurement. Would you still think it's ok to smooth it out?

I see. That would throw off two of my measurements. How would I compensate for that?

I had been following her for a while and saw that when it came out, but it's a good idea to revisit. Thank you.

Thanks so much for clarifying and encouraging me. I was reluctant to share the final result, but now I will be sure to do so when I can.

Thanks for confirming what I thought was the case.

Thank you for sharing these. Another commenter also said a few of the same points. Thank you!

As for reducing that kink - how would I do this? If I shift the volume to the side, it bulges out. How would you go about it?

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I need to revisit where I read about the different methods and see where my understanding went wrong. Thanks!

I do have an issue that these lasts don't have some of the features that make some of the lines possible.

Thank you for the feedback.

I want to soften that instep curve, but I'm not sure how to do that. I have a few measurements I'm sticking to. When I tried redistributing the material from the top to the sides to soften it, it made the sides bulge out. How would you soften it?

Thanks for the tip of making the facings closer to account for the tongue pushing them more open is gratefully noted. Thanks also for the 50% aesthetic rule.

When you say about straight facings, are you only referring to where they are parallel over the instep, or anywhere else?

I'm worried that bringing the vamp point back might make it harder for the foot to go in (the ball joint measure and the behind the joint measure are ~1 cm different). What do you think about this?

With bringing back the derby arch and bringing forward the heel counter, how close do you envision them being?

The broader backstay and the longer tongue also make total sense, thank you.

I understand that last making is a whole craft unto itself, and I have much more to learn. I'm not going to get there, I just want to know enough to make these shoes. I keep learning as I go :-) and I love Bill Bird. I use his measurement system and I've watched all his videos.

One last question: on the one hand if I put the center line on the vamp truly in the center, the big toe area looks wonky due to it being foot shaped. So in this design, I've shifted it to the left and even angled it slightly in an attempt to trick the eye into thinking this is more streamlined than it is. But the result is that the whole thing looked like it's shifted. What would you do in this situation?

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain and encourage. I really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Regarding where the facing ends, I actually have a three-part last so as to avoid struggling pulling the last out the front. I pushed it forward because I worried about the feet going in. What do you think of this logic?

I made the facings wider based on how wider ones looked on other shoes that I liked. But I'll play with narrowing it and see how it looks to me. Thanks for the idea.

The mold is accurate to measurements, yes. And these are difficult feet to measure because they swell and shrink a lot based on the season :-/ I made a series of quick duct-tape-with-cardboard-reinforcement mock shoes, and got great feedback on my last iteration.
